What would be your wilderness dream knife?

Tough choice.

I have a Buffalo River hunter. It is a great knife. I wouldn't consider it as a wilderness knife. Bob didn't make it to baton. It is definitely a hunter and is fantastic in that role.

If you want a bushcraft knife Tom Krein and Dan Koster both turn out great stuff. A Krein Bushcraft in a Paul Long sheath would probably be in your range. Same with the Koster 3V Nessmuk and the Rowe sheath.

I like the idea of a Sebenza too. If this is your only chance at a high end knife I'd consider a folder you could enjoy everyday.

I'm lucky to live 10 minutes from Krein, so I'm going to check out his shop tomorrow! I really like Paul Long's sheaths, though I don't know if I like them for me. I'm considering a Bushcraft and Tk1 matched set.

I appreciate the information on the Buffalo River Hunter, I likely would never baton with it, but it is still good to know.

You may as well stop looking. If you can't find something you like from Tom, you aren't going to find it anywhere. The fact that he is a great guy certainly doesn't hurt.

I prefer a larger knife than the Bushcraft and PSK and can highly recommend either the TK-5 or the TK-7:

Blade length is in the vicinity of 4". The 5 is D2 with black G10 and the 7 is A2 with green canvas micarta w/ red liners, but he will use whatever steel and handle materials you want. He has a couple other models about the same size (White Mountain Hunter, Recurve, Mule Deer Hunter), but I don't have any experience with them.

I'm at an awkward place, as I don't yet know what blade lengths that I like the best. And I don't have any specs on his knives, so I'm not sure the blade length on the Bushcraft. I have a wide range of personal blade lengths, but haven't had much time to get out and use them as much as I'd like to because of school. I've spent way to much time at his forums on USN drooling!

The Bushcraft's blade is about 3.5", it's not a large knife by any means. Tom can make just about anything you want. He's got dozens of models and variations. His flat grinds are astonishingly thin. I just don't see how you can go wrong with one from him.
