what would you call this blade?

No matter what you name it, get it in a nice sheath and
it looks like it would be great to have for a all around knife !

I'm not sure what you're calling taper. The back and edge look parallel to me. The blade looks practically identical to my Jarvenpaa leuku. (The handle of course does not.)

esav, it could be the angle of the photo, there is 1/4" of taper over about 6" of blade, which works out to be a decent amount. it is not super extreme, but enough to make me think machete...

I would call it........Knife. :D Looks useful, whatever you call it. It does have a machete shape, but it is just too small to be a machete.

I won't generalize about machetes, since many are good quality, but in a way they are inexpensive slashers. The leuku for all its similar shape is a real knife, used for utility more than clearing soft vegetation. Since the leuku comes from a subarctic area, there isn't much ground cover anyway and not much wood for chopping. Although the blades tend to be thin compared to our camp knives, a camp knife it really is.

Simon, I think that S7 blade with Paul Bos’s heat treatment regime bringing in at about 57Rc will be a great compromise between toughness and edge retention.

The shape of the knife lends itself to chopping and baton work; at that thickness and hardness is should excel at those tasks.

I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
