The next time something like that happens to you, the smartest thing you can do is get the Hell outta there and immediately call nine one one.
No can do
Not my style ;)
I thought about it afterwards
I guess I could have put som ear plugs and paper targets in my car and claim I was "on my way to the shooting range officer"..........

Have they no bathrooms in video games?
actually my favorite Counter Strike map was called Wall-Mart
That's right!!
Run around a wal-mart store and kill people!!
How un-PC is that?
I love it!!!
And yes
You could go into the bathrooms and kill an enemy in the stalls

Some of these stories are pretty chilling. I can't believe anyone would ever go anywhere with out some means of planned self defense. Even your voice.....

I remember one time my wife (then girlfriend) were hiking in Harper's Ferry VA along the river. We stopped for a quiet sit near a very peaceful, small waterfall. It ended up being fairl close to a road.

We sat there for quite some time enjoying the scenery when I just got "that feeling". I turned around and there was a guy sitting about 60 yards behind us and was looking right at us when I turned around. I nodded to him to let him know that I am aware of him. I got nothing in return.

At this time I am checking my pockets to make sure the knife is in place and am now looking for different exit routes. I turn around again and this guy has made his way a bit closer and has shifted to the right, which made me nervous since this is how I was trained in the military. Vary your approach to keep the subject off guard.

He was just out of place. He was not dressed for the terrain or the weather. He jeans and loafers on, and I'll never forget - a pull over wind breaker that was red and black with a pair of glasses that reminded me of the type of frames you get in the military. He had no binoculars or camera or anything. Just REALLY out of place.

I then stood up and said "Can I help you". He shook his head no.

At this point my knife is my hand. It's a folder and I opted to leave it closed but visibly in my hand. I told my wife to stay put and I took a few steps toward this guy.

In a stern voice told him to "get the f* out of here"

He actually did just that, I was very surprised.

There is no doubt in my mind that this man intended to do some type of harm to me or my wife.

Not on my watch....

ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings and always use your head and trust your gut. It CAN happen to you.

Is this actually a true story? After watching the movie I have been reading up on stuff about it and was interested in reading the book sometime.

Yeah, true story. First time in a long time, that I've thought about the actual chain of events. I remember that just before we got to the police station, the driver side swiped a lamp pole and tore up his already beat up early 50s chevy (pre 55).

myright - if I remember correctly Harpers Ferry is where they caught the murderer of a couple who were killed while they were sleeping on the AT in Pennsylvania. Happened a few years ago.

Another "Ahhh, it can't happen to me out in the grand and glorious arms of Mother Nature" story.

In 1983, in the beautiful, remote Clearwater country of north central Idaho, two people were camping. Robert Bravence, 27, and his wife, Cheryl Bravence, 25. Robert Bravence was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. According to the police reports, they were unarmed.

They were attacked and beaten to death by Mark Lankford or his brother, Bryan Lankford.

Mark Lankford was sentenced to death by an Idaho court. His brother, Bryan, was sentenced to life in prison for testifying against his brother. Bryan claimed his brother committed the crime, whereas his brother, Mark, claimed Bryan did the deed.(So much for Honor among thieves, and all that.)

In December, 2007, the extremely left liberal 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that "Mark Lankford must be either retried, or released, because of an error in jury instructions during his 1984 trial." (Associated Press; Idaho Statesman Newspaper, Dec. 22, 2007.)

His new trial was supposed to start in Feb., 2008, in Wallace, Idaho. (I don't know yet if it has begun.)

Note that Mark Lankford, a vicious murderer, or accomplice, , sat on Death Row for 23 years, without being put to death. If his brother, Bryan, did indeed commit the murders, he skated away from "the Chair."

This case is just one of many that occur around the country, "out in the sticks."

Nevertheless, no matter which brother committed the murders, those who think that it's needless to be armed and alert out in the boonies, are living in a dream world of denial. "Ahhh, it can't happen to me."

It was a very wierd situation. One I hope I never have to be in again, but will be prepared for.

Makes you really wonder how close one could really have been to being a victim when you start connecting the dots.

It all comes back to being AWARE of your surroundings and having the balls enough to trust your gut even if it means possibly offending someone or embarassing yourself.

I'm not trained in self defense nor have I done much reading on the subject, but I think if you found yourself in a situation like you mentioned from the movie where someone had gotten the drop on you and you were already at gunpoint you would have to try to determine weather the person on the other end of the gun just wanted to take your stuff or if they were intent on hurting or killing you or a loved one. If they just wanted your stuff I'd say let 'em have it. . . it's not worth your life. If it looks like they're intent on hurting or killing then you would have try to find and take any opportunity to get them first.

Brian Hartnell and his female companion played this game and lost. The book has the scene much more in-depth than the movie. Anyone interested in self-defense should read the book and watch the movie. While they are not perfect, they show a glimpse into what a true landshark The Zodiac Killer was. This is especially true if you have a whining friend or relative who doesn't believe in self-defense, the scene spoken about in this thread will separate those who can be saved from those who are just food for predators. It is one of the most violent scenes I have ever viewed and it is true to what actually happened to them.

1. Never let someone take you from a public place to a private place. They're going to kill you. At least if the situation goes terminal on you, you have a better chance of survival with a handgun wound in a parking lot instead of somewhere pushed out of a car in a more secluded area. People will hear the gunshot and you will, in any major city, have a MedEvac chopper there within 30 minutes. The time and place to make your stand is right there instead of trying to be a psychic and figuring out if the person is going to really kill you or if he just wants the $57.90 in your wallet and pocket, your wedding ring and Fossil watch. It doesn't matter if you have a handgun, knife, baton or nothing, this is the place to make your stand.

2. If you are already in the private place; it's up to them if you live or die so you have to act. Brian Hartnell played it over and over in his mind and he didn't want to do the wrong thing and have someone that just wanted his car keys to kill them both and then he would be blamed for "trying to be a hero." That's more liberal nonsense like anyone interested in self-defense is being a "vigilante," which we have seen right here in this very forum.

3. Never let them tie you up. All of the reassurances they give you will be meaningless when they kill you. I remember reading in Farnam's Street Smart Gun Book, I think that is what it is titled, he has a picture of a guy with a stocking over his face and a large kitchen knife in his hand and the victim is tied up lying on the floor. The caption reads: "Unless this is your idea of a good time, never let them tie you up." That's from memory, it might not be exact, but that's what he meant.

In this particular scenario with the Zodiac Killer, basically, they were probably doomed to failure anyway because this guy was a stone killer and without a firearm and he has one and is well-versed in their use, he's going to kill you. He's not in it for the watch and wallet or the car, he left a message scrawled on the guy's car when he left, he didn't take the car. The idea with him was..."Man is the most dangerous game." If he really embraced that, he would have only hunted down police officers and other people he knew were armed, etc. But it meant something to him, it doesn't matter what it means to us. He liked hunting people. He is not the only one. Ted Bundy liked to hunt women, etc.

I agree with Don Rearic's post 100%. The problem is, we have all this whining by the media, backed up by the obligatory police lieutenant, don't fight, it's (car, money, etc.) not worth your life. Give him what he wants, etc. If more people started fighting back, and not allowing themselves to be taken to a quiet area, we would have less of this. I get into this discussion with lefty family members all the time. I preach personal responsibility, they preach letting the "authorities" handle it. Oh they'll handle it, all right. They'll arrange for transport of your body to the morgue for id.

Opportunistic thieves can usually be backed down with the proper show of force. Serial killers and the like need to be dealt with more directly. I agree that preparation and situational awareness are the most important, but sometimes you can be surprised. That's when plan B comes into play.

Probably the most effective Plan B antidote is a lead injection, say about 230 grains at 900 fps. Tried and true, baby. Tried and true.

For our neighbors to the North, I wish you could have more options available to you, I truly do.

In Canada, correct me if I'm wrong, you can still carry a shotgun or rifle in the bush. I think I'd feel pretty well armed with a short 12 ga pump in the wilderness. Mac

Mac,

Yeah, but it's more than a little goofy up there. Such a beautiful place and good people deserve better than to be told it's OK to use pepper spray on a bear but not a rapist. I know I have said it before, but I just can't wrap my head around that type of nuttery.

Don,

I'm with you 100%. I suffer under a worse burden of restrictions here in Brazil. In the last 10 years we have lost 465,000 people to murder here and yet they want all victims disarmed. I used to be able to carry in the bush here. Not legally, but a first offense for a registered gun was a warning and you got the gun back in most cases. Now it's a two year jail term. I can't even legally transport my guns to a range and it is a grey area as to if I can carry on my own walled in property outside my actual house. Canada's laws look pretty good from down here. Mac

To those in Brazil or Canada:
Can you carry these?

My government just banned Tasers without a reason and made carrying nearly all kinds of weapons illegal. Only exceptions: Pepperspray (including the Kimber lifeact and the JPX), some sorts of knives and blank guns (which can be loaded with pepper or blackpowder, too).
My telescopic baton is now useless and my Taser is illegal... So for HD I just sharpened my small axe. It's more humane anyway... :barf:

Mac,

I know. I have a friend from Brazil and his Dad still lives down here. Pretty cool setup, he owns his own business so to cut down on international long distance charges, he purchased a Nextel for his Dad and shipped it down there and now they talk whenever they want to, instantly.

He has told me about life in Rio and San Paulo, it is not pretty.

I think there are a lot of people that live in such restrictive places that another, less restrictive place looks incredibly attractive. We don't have as much freedom here anymore, either. The inevitable march towards totalitarianism seems to be the worldwide blight.

My government just banned Tasers without a reason and made carrying nearly all kinds of weapons illegal.

All governments have reasons for banning weapons. They don't like armed Citizens and instead prefer disarmed, defenseless subjects. They don't like the idea that people can get tired of their greed, corruption and everything else, they don't like the idea that the people can get tired of being bossed around constantly...that's the reason everyone has to be disarmed. While the Taser is no match for government gone mad, it is the indoctrination of making people rely on the police for their protection, it's a nice sugar coated way to usher in slavery.

People can call this conspiratorial garbage or whatever, the fact remains: they keep banning weapons and basically doing very little about real crime. Why? Why do these choose the likes of child molesters and why do they keep releasing them from prison to prey on more kids and instead focus on law abiding people who own guns?

It makes sense only when you consider that there are three kinds of people that want weapons controlled and/or banned:

1. Ignorant, fearful people.

2. People that really believe banning guns and other weapons will control crime, i.e., stupid people.

3. Control freaks who wish to enslave people.

Einsatzgruppen Drei uses the other two groups to get it done.

Let's not turn this into a political discussion please, okay? Otherwise I gotta move this thread.

AAA

Awareness- do not allow one to get close or surprise you. You don't have to be paranoid to keep your eyes open.
Attitude- do not fall into nonaction or submissiveness(sp?)- don't be afraid to fight- be afraid to have someone else in control
Ability- practice some form of disarmament or control of others. Does not mean working in a dojo 40 hours per week. Even casual sparring with a friends improves coordination and reflexes. As do sports such as basketball- betters balance and hand/eye coordination.

On the trail wear a USMC brown T- heck he(perp) does not know the difference and I seriuosly doubt any jarhead is going to get pissed, they risked their lives for your saftey, letting their heritage continue to do the same is a proud thing. Same thing for martial arts or fitness gyms. Perps prefer soft targets- the dog would be a good first alert if having them along is acceptable.

My biggest concern is when sleeping. I love nature and sleep like a log. I feel pretty vulnerable then. Stringing signal wire is disconcerting to other hikers.

2Door

I once saw a device for runners that was nicknamed "The Screamer"- a very loud two peice device, one part clipped to the person and you just yanked the second part off- activating the alarm. Only way to stop it is to reconnect the two peices... this leaves you free to fight or run while the alarm continues. I should look for that item.

That's true, and in fact in the most Western province, BC, you can FAIRLY easily get a permit to carry a handgun in the bush.

I carry my M14s all the time in the bush, but that's more because I am usually out shooting stuff, that would be quite a large-scale approach to self-defense!

It's not uncommon to see 14" pump shotguns up here, and there was a company making 8" barreled pump shotguns for a while...think they ran into some trouble with the classification system after a bit though. But those are some short, lightweight cannons for defense against...probably anything!
