What would you do if you lost your knife?

Biting the bullet and replacing it seems to be what I would do.

Confession: I have limited the carry of my favorites anymore and have taken to lower priced "beaters" that I can use, abuse and lose without the bite being too deep. i understand that life is short and all of that but I get more enjoyments out my knives anymore when I worry about them less. I'm not talking about $5 gas station knives but things along the lines of RATs, Kershaw-Emersons, C-C Voyagers and the like.

Loss is, IMO, the primary threat to a folder and the hedge against that is being careful and minimizing financial exposure; couple this with the very good offerings these days in the lower price ranges and you can readily understand how the more affordable beaters get more fresh air compared tot he more expensive knives in my collection.

If it was my favorite I would immediately replace it. I've never lost one of my good knives so hopefully I won't ever face this.

I had a coworker many years ago that was carrying an early Emerson. He was on a construction site looking at a masonry cavity wall and somehow managed to drop the knife into the cavity. He couldn't ask the contractor to tear out the wall to retrieve his knife so it is still there.

Of course i would replace it, probably twice
However if it was a limited or custom that may be difficult or impossible

Depends on the knife. The things I carry to work eh I have replacements. My cherished knives I'd go into a deep depression. .. Then buy a new one.

Pretty much all of my knives are fairly inexpensive so I'd be upset from a thrift standpoint but most I'm not really sentimental about most of them.

Seeing how I generally carry three knives and still have 30 more at home that are not carried, I'd likely just add a new one into the empty space the other left. My only super very berry favorites are fixed blades and I'd sure as heck replace them if possible, but being that my favorite fixed are Busse Combat sometimes that's a hard one to do.

Far as folders go, all of my current ones can be replaced with ease except my Benchmade 610 Ruckus, and I would be pretty bummed out about it. Not a great chance to replace it in same condition. With the sketchy pocket clip is has I have been considering asking a kydex bender to mold a belt sheath for me specifically to reduce the risk of loss for it. This one was/is my grail folder.

Meh, it's just a knife. I'd be annoyed that I lost it, but I'm not particularly attached to any of them. If it was the only one suitable for a particular purpose, I'd replace it, otherwise I'd just grab something suitable off the shelf and move on.

I'd be more worried that a small kid or someone unfamiliar with knives would find it and hurt themselves with it.

I have a few buck 110s and have carried one since I was a little squatter and I have almost lost one a few times leaving it on the back on my truck and stuck in a log or two in the woods. if I were to actually loose it it would be a heart breaker and I would spend the next few days looking through hell and high water for it.

Replace it with another one, and it would be a great excuse to try something new....
(Not that I've ever needed much of an excuse to do that)

I do like my knives a lot, but I try to not get too emotionally attached to anything that has no heartbeat.

true but when you carry the same knife from when you were 10 you start to get attached to it.

I now have a backup due to a knife failure / break, which I would use temporarily, if readily available. Since I choose my knives carefully, and they are valued tools I cannot afford to be without, the 1st thing I would do is retrace my steps & go back to try to find the one I lost.

Ironically, 3 weeks ago I lost my BM585. I was almost home from the beach, had stopped at a 7/11 to get my daughter an ice cream, and as I exited my car, I reached for the security of feeling my knife in my pocket, and low and behold it was not there.

I drove 30 minutes back to the beach where I came from, and checked the spot where I parked. I had a feeling it may be there, because when I was loading my car before I left, I heard a strange metal scraping sound, which seemed odd. Sure enough, my knife was on the ground, right in the area where I was loading up the beach supplies................... and the unusual sound I heard, was my knife when it hit the ground after it somehow came out of my pocket.

If I lost my knife and could not find it, I would immediately use my backup, and purchase another to replace the lost one. If I had any extra cash at the time, I would upgrade to a knife with higher quality steel.

I did lose one of my very favorite blades a few years ago. A old Buck 110 that my wife bought me when we first met. Skinned lots of game with that knife before I set it on the bumper of my Jeep and drove off. Still bothers me to even think about it. :(

My buddy left his vintage Cold Steel knife (with the rubber handle) on the bumper of his truck, drove roundtrip to work and back (60 miles) and the knife was still there! Those Chevy trucks ride SMOOTH...

I'll never forget when the TSA took my Spyderco Hunter when I was leaving Hong Kong. That was my first Spydie and I had it for many years. My fault, it was left in my carry-on, but it still hurts....

This scares me, Ive lost one recently and im in the process of modding a clip like this to fit my knife so it doesn't happen again ...

spyderco sage 2? probably grab another one and pimp it to the max :D taichung spyderco's really warm my heart with their immense value for money so i never hesitate adding more to my collection.

I'd hate to lose any of my GECs because they'd be hard to replace, but I'd pick another knife and carry on.

Depends. If it was one of my "favorites" that I like carrying because its pretty or fun to fondle (which are completely legitimate reasons for it being a favorite) I would probably just live without it. If it was something like my Pacific Salt which is a favorite because I use it daily for saltwater work I would replace it immediately.

I once added one of those to a multitool. It got snagged on something while I was on public transit and bent so bad I couldn't make it work again. Hope it works better for you than for me.

Swear a lot and grab the next knife.

As to the OP's question, this is what I have done and will do again.
