What would you do?

I'm surprised so many people would be willing to keep the knife if they were in the op's situation...

Sadly I'm not surprised. Owning a small business I get to see all kinds. There are lots out there who weren't taught ethics or decency.....to be fair......at least not the same kind I was taught as a child.

Also to be fair....saying one might keep it standing on the sidelines isn't the same as being in the game and actually keeping it. I'd bet most would put the effort in to make it right if it were them. Point to note....The op did send an email and did the right thing.

Send him and E-mail and see if you should Just refuse it thru the USPS, they will get it back to the shipper and all is well.

Even if the op did decide to keep it and not email the seller he had received the original knife you can bet the seller will be keeping an eye on the original tracking number. As stated it's best to see what the seller would prefer you to do in this situation.

It doesn't change the circumstances, but I think the people that were saying they would keep it, probably assumed it was a $10 knife from china, that most likely cost the seller all of $1, and wouldn't be worth the money in shipping.

It doesn't matter the price, I would contact the seller, and see what he'd like to do. If he tells you to keep it, great, but I would still offer to at the very least split the cost of the knife with him.

The replies here speak a lot about each member. Very interesting thread!

I look forward to hearing that you did the right thing!

I had the same thing happen with some parts for my motorcycle.

In the fine print they asked to see a pic of the destroyed parts in order to keep the duplicate (sounded like this happened more than once!), but I contacted them and asked if they'd prefer I send them back (on my dime) or destroy them and show proof.

In the end they apologized for the problem, told me to keep or sell the second set and thanked me for my honesty.

I think it's more trouble for the seller to deal with than to recover inexpensive items.

Good on you for not running with the knife. Let us know what happens.

Edit- oh and I did a giveaway for the parts. ;)

Contact the seller and see what would he want you to do. If returning back is an hassle, pay for it - the seller showed exceptional honesty and integrity by going by your word. Good luck!

Yesss! The seller deserves it the way they handled things anyway.

I'm totally against just pocketing it and I'm with everyone else on contacting the seller.

I actually had a similar thing happen to me. I was buying two phone cases and it arrived promptly from China. A week later I received another phone case, so I contacted the seller immediately asking if he would like it to be sent back or allow me to pay for it since I didn't order a third phone case. He cut me a deal when I bought two, so I didn't mind paying for the shipping even though it's his mistake. He told me to keep it as a gift for the holidays.
