Hey, folks,

Now that I'm back in action after a long time away, I wanted to ask the members here: what would you like to see changed/improved/kept the same, etc.?

This forum belongs to all the members, and as moderator, I want to make sure it 's always a place that everyone feels welcome and informed.

Thanks in advance,

Brian.

A dedicated link on the forum page would be nice to attract new members.

I do not think new members are going to click on training and tactics to find info on outdoor skills

Thanks, DD, I agree - it's hard to know where to go to find this without an in-depth search. Many folks were posting on BFC for a long time, who were interested in wilderness and survival, and didn't know this sub-forum was here. I'll bring it up with Spark and see what he says.

i think spark combined all these forums to clean things up a little. he done this to other sections.

Yeah I think that would be a good idea. Not sure why it was removed in the first place?

Other than that I think it's good. About 40 to 60 plus people viewing the forum at any time. Any time you post anything you got two or 3 people responding which encourages more people to start threads. Can't ask for much else.

Maybe we should do a few passarounds? Is that permitted?

Passarounds are a great idea and definitely permitted. Many forumites do that in various places here.

Would like to see a sticky on Navigation resources / training.

Navgating by the Stars / Compass etc

It could be based on different levels of expertise (Novice - Advanced).
Perhaps we could incorporate a way to test and reach different levels of expertise and develop an associated ranking perhaps in time with various Wilderness and Survival Skills.

sp

FAQ's and links to organizations appropriate to disaster preparedness, search and rescue, etc.

Other than that, we're really short on threads about rescuing scantily clad ladies in the woods :D

I think we should get all the folks from W&S VS all the folks in Prac Tac, and have a good old fashioned RUMBLE. See what group really are the butt kickers in here.;):D

Passaround for "outdoor" specific knives here would be great. I would love to see opinions for folks here (that really do USE their knives) on all the variations.

Choppers
Machetes
Kuhks
3 1/2 to 4 1/2" blades
Axes and hatchets.

Possibly kit passarounds as well.

Kelly Kettles
Trianga meth stoves
Hammocks
Tents
Etc.........

 I agree ,I know Spark just clean up alot of the forums/sub forums but new members my not post in the right forum section due to under prac/tac.This is my Favorite section on the BF and I hate to see it not utitlized to it's full potential if a basic member can not find due to limit on the search portion to him.just my 2cents...Thanks

How about a way of indexing (maybe a sticky) significant threads. For example the survival kits thread has 10,000 views or something like that. It is a great resource and will eventually be lost to the masses...

The site (as opposed to this forum) needs a better search feature.

+1 for DaleW - nekkid women holding knives in the woods:D.

Yeah it bummed me out when they nixed the search feature.

I had left a lot of pics I hosted for threads about knives and stuff undeleted because I figured somebody might be searching out a certain type of knife or something and the pics would help them.

Now that's not really possible:thumbdn:

I likethe idea of a significant threads sticky. It may take awhile - I started this forum back in 1999! I'll see about how to do it efficiently.

Thanks Brian for making this section...I save my pics as well just incase there is someone doing a search and pull a thread I may have contributed to with pics as well....

Well I've been enjoying it for at least two + years, and haven't had the pleasure of "meeting" you yet so..........THANKS BRIAN. I like it here.

Skammer is a pain in the butt (kidding Skam, you make things interesting;)) but then so am I.:D

The Wiki thread (that is now a sticky) is a good one. If we could do something similar with reviews of kit, knives, axes, ect that would be beneficial. Especially to those just starting out with gear.

This is by far one of the best learning sub forums regarding skills, and gear IMO.

Brian,

If you wanted to index, you might be able to establish criteria that only evaluates threads with x many thousand views and screen for legitimate exchange vs. ego flares and than classify.... Just an idea, a whole of info exists on this sub-forum.......

Tarmix,

When I have more time Ill post a re-introduction/bio. I've been practicing and teaching wilderness skills for years, also taught tactical/shooting/hand-to-hand for LEO and Military, plus working in the security contracting sector. In that arena, did kidnap & ransom, protection details, etc. Also, I was featured in Ron Hoods Vol 11 survival video: Solo: The Quest for Survival. I've been training in martial arts/combatives since 1981, as well. My avatar is a photo from when I was teaching High-Risk Vehicle takedown tactics to Boston PD's undercover gang unit with Wes Doss. SWAT magazine did a feature article on it in the January 2006 issue. Here are a couple links to threads, including further links to past threads, that will give you a little more background:

Brian,

While a pertinent sticky or two with pointers to many worthwhile threads would be good, please don't make this one of those forums with too many stickies at the top, filling a significant portion of screen real estate. For example, with Barrabas's suggestion, above about a sticky for navigation skills: I really don't want the top of the screen to be filled with an individual sticky each for every relevant outdoor skill... one for navigation, one for fire building, one for shelter building, one for first aid, one for hunting, etc... and soon you have way too many stickies.
