What would you like to see in this forum?

Keep the ideas coming, guys, thanks. Sub-forum or not, the main goal is to reduce stickies to a minimum and make it so people can go right to the info they want without confusion, and this is all helping determine the best ways.

Mike, I'll take a look at the Flickr photos.

Best,

Brian (who's let housekeeping here go, and, well, needs to really do some housekeepoing at home, too!)

over all I think things are good, getting here quicker would be nice for new comers, though I have this place bookmarked so. just wish I had more time, and the dial-up...... wow.

Anyways, good to see you back Brian.

Pitdog,

I hear ya - that's Spark's decision. You can register for a paid membership, and then search to your heart's content!

On the topic of stickies: Make a master sticky for different large topics, like Skills, Firestarting, etc. Then, put the different link threads and smaller stickies under each one. It would combine the Master Sticky and subforum ideas. Also, quicker navigation would be a perk.

 Good idea!

Un-bury us, give wilderness a link out on the main page, so it can actually be found.

Not counting the exchange this is the #6 forum as far as number of posts. I dunno why the tactics and training header was moved.

Still seems buried being in community. :thumbdn:

Thanks, DD, I agree - it's hard to know where to go to find this without an in-depth search. Many folks were posting on BFC for a long time, who were interested in wilderness and survival, and didn't know this sub-forum was here. I'll bring it up with Spark and see what he says.

hello haven't met you yet other than when you moved my post;). hey anybody got a map:D. if your the one who started this place i would like to personaly thank you. this sub forum has had a huge impact on my outdoor fun and skills. as well as refined my day pack down from 36 lbs. to 12 lbs. couldn't have done it with out this place. i was very sad to see it get buried like it did, if you could rescue it and make it findable again that would be one of the best imporvements i could think of. I think we desurve better than whine and cheese:confused: i know spark is the boss and what he says goe's but d@mn man it took me a while to locate after it moved no one will every find us down here. hey somebody through me a line i need to get out of this hole. but sirusly Im glad there is a MOD here to look after us now. Thanks for what ever you can do ,or even try to do for us.:thumbup: Robert

Tarmix,

Thanks. I was away for awhile because I was in a serious car accident, traumatic brain injury and the whole works. Went from being active to flat on my back, with memory, partial paralysis, and numerous other effects. Luckily, I'm recovered 100% but it's taken a few years. In many ways, I feel like I'm relearning many of the things I could do in my sleep before the accident. I have learned a great deal about perseverance and dealing with confusion and emotional turmoil, and uncertainty. At the same time, I think my previous experience helped me get through the ordeal, because when you are in extreme situations in the field, uncertainty is your constant companion, so you learn not to worry about it and just concentrate on the tasks at hand without worry if you're gonna get killed or make it out. The best anyone can do is apply their knowledge and practiced skills in order to increase the odds in their favor. It's all about managing probabilities, and it does not get any more exact than that.

Going through this injury and aftermath teaches you about how the survival mentality often applies in many other areas of our lives, not just the wilderness.

oh sh!t man you're one tough mother glad to here you're better. i guess this would of been one of those times when better off in the woods.
take care of your mellon. this thread may give ya a head ach.

I'm sitting here trying to think of what I'd like to see, but I really can't think of anything. I actually don't even want all the stickies. Maybe I'm a minority, but I don't mind one bit if the same question gets asked on a monthly basis. Maybe people's opinions have changed? If you asked me whether I liked a hatchet or chopper a year ago, you would have got a very different answer. What about new people here who didn't post their opinion on a topic? People around here sometimes seem to think if they answer a question once, they should never have to answer it again. Don't ever get a job in customer service lol

I'll say it again. We have a great forum going here. There's very little of the snobbish/elitist attitudes I see in other forums. I like it here.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but I would really like a sticky devoted to pictures of campsites/gear/hikes-backpacking trips.

kind of like over at busse the photos only sticky up at the top. i like and don't like i love seeing the pics but my DSL hate loading them.:D

Brian, I have a solution to two BF problems.

The first is that Wilderness is buried in Tactics & Training. It took me years to discover this sub-forum. It doesn't really belong with Prac Tac or Filipino martial arts. Conceptually they are just not the same, and the "Tactics" moniker throws new members off.

The second problem is in Traditional Blades, which is meant for blades only, but where they are experiencing growing pains by getting into traditional scouting stories, traditional clothing, "as taught by elders", etc.

Why not come up with a new Forum, like
"Traditional & Survival"? You could have three sub-forums: Traditional Blades (knife content only, as Spark wishes), Traditional Community (storytelling/"way things used to be" posts which are growing attracting wider interest), and the Wilderness & Survival Skills (which are mostly very traditional skills, but sometimes with modern tools).

A "Traditional & Survival" Forum would help broadcast Wilderness' existence and help separate traditional blade-only content from traditional stories/culture. The three naturally hang together in my view.

JMHO
