I've been perusing this forum for a while and it sounds like you guys have some pretty good ideas. I would like to hear from you on what you think we should make next. Don't be afraid to give me a challenge.Feel free to go outside the box in your thinking, or not.

What areas of the production knife arena do you feel we should put more focus on and why?

What do you think is missing?

I would love to see a pocket fixed blade based on your Hawaiian Amala.
5 ish inches OAL
Micarta Scales
CPM 154 blade
Leather sheath with pocket clip

I would also like to see a super highend production knife. A fresh design with the best materials (Timascus please) and incredible production tolerances (along the lines of the KO Forum knife).

How about a flat ground drop point FB made from S30V or DLC'ed 3V. An all purpose, survival, hunting, field craft, high performance cutting machine. AND you and me design it...hehehe.. Hey stranger stuff has happened;-)

I would like to see a regular old drop point style folder with g10 handles and a pocketclip that can be adjusted/moved around. Kind of a tactical sort of knife, but priced at a lower cost. Not a particularly original idea, I guess, but if you made a "Basic Tac" knife, I would buy one.

S30V Spite with G10 handle inserts in the $100 range. Flat ground, of course.

Edit: Or maybe a sub-$100 version of the Packrat in either S30V or VG10 and micarta.

Hmmmm, let me think...

I also like this Spec Bump (what kind of coating is on that blade Ken?):

I would LOVE a Kershaw TABOO with S30V or similar steel, a frame lock handle of any steel (or anodized titanium) with option for tip up carry. I would really love the G10 or Carbon Fiber handle inserts, but that might really jack up the price.

If a TABOO never happens, I would love to see more "Boron" coated knives. My Boron chive has been clipped to my keychain for over a year now and it is still scratch-free! I would love, and have asked Thomas repatedly for, a Boron Random Leek or a BORON Shallot! Talk about cool!

:D

Kershaw/Onion Taboo. All out, nothing left behind. Give us something to make the Sebenza guys cry.

I would love to see some SpeedSafe knives with multiple blades (well, at least two different blades). Something in the Mini-Mojito to Leek size range, on the elegant side to be a gentleman's folder or practical urban EDC. Stud lock and the Mojito's flipper integrated safety. Blade styles should definitely include one of your amazing recurves and a wharncliff, sheepsfoot, or hawksbill.

There should also be an all out, hardcore, heavy duty, full size variation of the multi-blade knife. Blades should be at least 3.75" or longer. The build should be up there with the ZT line. 3D machined titanium handles that have been skeletonized, but keep your amazing organic/flowing shapes.

I'd love for a version of it to be a rigging knife, but if it were anything like I described, I'd be happy.

I'd love to see you reinterpret the Random and Mini Tasks in new materials and techniques.

I think I mentioned it elsewhere, but a production version of the Wrinkle would be a must have for me. ZT version even better.

I almost forgot, how about a manual flipper utilizing the stud lock and a variation of the Mini Mojito's flipper safety? It is hard to imagine that anything else could be as fast or smooth.

A scaled up version of the Mini Mojito would be great too! It just has the most amazing shape and proportions!

All of my hopes and desires were realized with the advent f the S30V/G10 Leek.

I have two each of the polished/satin and rough/bead-blasted. One each for EDC, and one each for when the first to wear out.

I also really liked the spec bump very much. I have one each of the 3-D spider pattern and wave patern.

Thanks for asking, though, MR. Onion. See you in Atlanta?

Who is the target audience? Are the new projects aimed at providing a tool that nobody else makes, or is the sole purpose to create a market around a tool that does not yet exist?

I think the area of concealment has yet to been tapped by large manufacturers. Providing slim (not exactly small), easily concealed tools for personal protection could be of benefit to real folks at home, as well as those of us that find ourselves in an unsafe work environment.

I do think some knifemakers have scratched the surface and provide some tools that will work, but these are not mass produced as of yet. I was thinking of in the waist band concealable folders that are slim, light, assisted opening, have short clips made for the waist band that allow the folder to lay flat along the back of the hip. The clips might attach in multiple places, even allowing for a horizontal concealed carry of the knife.

FRN/plastic/titanium/aluminum/G10/CF scales (depends on your price point), with stainless liner/s and hardware (high rust and salt resistance-low cost). Coated strong steel, not really concerned with high hardness.

The idea is to have something extremely slim, easily deployable (assisted opening), concealable and comfortable in the waist or inside pocket. I was thinking a long oval or stretched egg shape design would fit well. A three inch blade with no longer than a 3.5 overall length would work well. A spear point with false top edge would allow for good penetration and still the user to feel comfortable holding it. Did I say it needed to be slim?

That is just an idea I had, but have yet to do something about it.

I did recently design an Air Crew specific knife with my knifemaker (definitely fills a market hole). Forged 52100 steel, heat and cryo treated, and Walter Birdsong Black-T coated. We discovered that GunKote and Duracoat coatings just don't hold up for a heavy use tool. We'll see how the Black-T works. I also helped design a couple folders with 52100 Black-T coated blades, though they aren't a design that hasn't been done before...for the most part.

I've always been a fan of your designs, even though my appeal is towards a more traditional design. You have put affordable good quality knives in our hands...and thanks for the assisted folder...great job.

Every idea so far is great! I like the way you think guys!! Please keep them comming . I will print and post this list on my project wall and study these concepts. I agree the Taboo, Wrinkle, Pack Rat and Spite are valid production pieces. I have some two bladed folder designs in sketch form already and have been thinking about that for a while. I definately think a ZT Air Crew/ Pilot knife is needed. And we need some more fixed blade options. Keep them comming !!! This is awesome!!

Hm, would you be able to maybe show us some of those dual bladed sketches?

I definately think a ZT Air Crew/ Pilot knife is needed.
If you decide to go in this direction, I would be more than happy to give you some feedback on the design. I've been flying since 1989 as a C-130 Flight Engineer. Currently, I'm advising/flying with our Iraqi counterparts in building their operations capabilities. When you think of design, you need to think of its use, carry options and durability in various environments. Cost is really not a big factor in a knife like this, as most aviators do not mind paying good money for a quality tool that fulfills a specific need. My knifemaker and I have two final prototypes, with the latest being the final one available to the public...if we decide to go that direction. I also have an idea to enhance one of the edges for further cutting capabilities on a future upgrade.

This type of knife not only appeals to the common aviator, but will also appeal to our Army helicopter aviators/ground maintenance and special forces/security police/contractors deploying "outside the wire."

Like everyone here, I love the ZT line. Like most people here, I have family members in the business where they would use them - but they're all pretty big (5+ inches handle) like most knives in this category.

A lot of people who are shorter avoid the knives because that's just too big - a 4 inch handle that is equally powerful would make a lot of people happy.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Ken. It's really cool that you're asking us. I think that's where other companies need to take notice. Not only in the knife world, but every where else.

As for knives, I've always asked for a super Leek, but maybe the Shallot fills that role. I'd still like to see a straight edge. I'm not into the recurve blades as much. I'm really looking forward to the composite Shallots. I like the better steels and tough handles like Ti. Frame locks are good.

And I've been thinking of fixed blades lately too. I'm thinking two things. Something bigger, 8-9" blade for camp chopping etc. Then a skinner. No gut hook. Even tho these are users in my life, I like pretty wood scales. Handle shape can make up for grippy materials.

Use you're creative skills and make your usual cool stuff.

a manual studlock? could be neat brad. anything along the lines of the mojito and you know i'm in. but also i love the taboo and have been waiting for some version of it for years. lately i have found the packrat and the spite to be interesting with the pronounced belly (cue BF jokers).

i would say to shy away from the ridiculously high-end steels for your next knife and focus on ZDP and SG2 as i think those are the greatest quality user steels around. other than that, i'm with brad, lets make the sebenza guys weep a little.

I'd like too see something a bit smaller for areas like mine that have 2.5" blade restrictions. So I'd like to see a knife with a blade length of 2.5" max, with decent steel and a finger choil. A flat ground plain edge, drop point(similar to a M-Cyclone) or wharncliff blade, with jimping, and studs. If speedsafe is used I'd like an on/off switch like the Cyclone, or a manual stud lock, or frame lock. Some LEO's consider speedsafe in the same light as a switch blade, so I'd prefer a manual opener. I've had to look past a lot of Kershaw knives because of the flippers and speedsafe, due to how the locals interpret the law here. Open construction would be a plus for easy cleaning, and a handle around 3-3/4" contoured for a full sized hand, four fingered grip with the choil. I'd also like to see G10 or Micarta in assorted colors, sprint runs, with exotic steels...just like your doing:D This would be my idea for a legal anywhere EDC.
