What would you take to Iraq.

Last time I deployed over there they issued me a Banchmade auto stryker and I took my leatherman

My son took a Recon Scout factory second from Cold Steel and a Kershaw Black Out. Both have held up extremely well. He swears by both of them. The handles of the Cold Steel knife are great in the 120 plus degree heat and stay put in his hand even when he is all sweaty. The Black Out is holding up well to the sand and heat also.
For what it is worth he wanted to take a SOG Navy Seal knife but he bought two before being deployed and on both of them the sheath security straps broke before he even could use it. After being there he said the SOGS handle isn't as good for keeping it in your hand as the CS is.

I don't know if anyone has already suggested this because there are so many posts I haven't read them all but what about a SOG Tsunami? I agree with everyone that's been saying about a multi-tool - that's a very good idea.
But as a main knife a SOG tsunami might be just the thing. A slight serration that's very sharp It's got a good solid handle....there's loads to say about it probably but my describing skills don't seem to be very good at the moment. Go to here for more information: http://www.sogknives.com/tsunami.htm
It's got some good information here, and if not a tsunami, then perhaps another sog? :D

For what it's worth

1. a multi-tool is a must have, some units are issued them, depends on the supply system.

2. a small folder works good (I carry a Benchmade 9053 at all times)

3. a flashlight is a MUST. I can't even count the number of people in my unit that came over here with out one of any kind. if you have the money to spend buy a surefire, If you can get in good with a supply section the 123's are in the system for NVG's, ANCD's etc. Spend the money get one of the LED versions, don't have to worry about the dang bulb burning out, or breaking.
