What you reading?+favorite books/characters?

I'm reading The Source by Michener right now, and then the last book of the Gunslinger series. I'm not a huge Stephen King fan, but that series was pretty awesome, in my humble opinion.

The Jester by James Patterson and Andrew Greeley (I think)

Shibumi by Trevarian

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Any of Eric Lustbader's Ninja books

I love the Alex Cross character in the James Patterson books

The Eliot Pattison "Shan Tao Tun" series (The Skull Mantra, Water Touching Stone, etc.)

And a gazillion more books and characters that I can't think of right now.

I'm a big Clancy fan but lately I have been hooked on Clive Cussler. Just can't seem to be able to put his books down. He is easy to read and keeps you wanting more throughout the entire book.Give him a try if you haven't already.

never read cussler, i will certainly check one out.

thx!

Second to James Patterson's Alex Cross. About to start on Cross after I finish another one of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books, Death Masks . Never saw the Dresden Files but the books are decent and very tongue-in-cheek.

Also surprised no one has mentioned Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter character yet.

The Nicholas Linnear books by Eric van Lustbader are some of me favorites as well but I passed on the Bourne Continuation........

Robert E Howard with Bran Mak Morn being about my favorite. Although the Cormac Mac Art ones are good and I think Carl Edgar Wagner fleshed out a whole 5 or 6 books about Cormac.

David Gemmel pretty much everything that he has written

G R R Martin I have just read his Fire and Ice series, its long and takes a while which is good since I read pretty fast.

I don’t do much non fiction but one of the last I read that I really liked was called “The Devil knew how to ride”. It was about William Clark Quantrell

He's not likely to ever be compared to any of the literary giants but the man can sure tell an entertaining story. Good, fun, light reading.

Right now I'm reading the 3rd book, "The Majors", in WEB Griffin's Brotherhood of War series. And just finished "Gates of Fire"; I want to read more of Pressfield's work now. Also just started a book by David Fromkin called "A Peace to End All Peace" which recounts the fall of the Ottoman empire and the events that led up to the creation of the modern Middle East. Jury is still out on that one but it seems to be a good book.

And browsing through a coffee table book called "Weapon: A Visual History of Arms and Armor". Good stuff! Although I do object to the exclusion of the Kabar knife from the modern knife section and of the M40 from the sniper rifle section. WTH.

Hunter, Stephen- U.S. sniper Bob Lee Swagger, and his deceased father, Earl.

Parker, Robert B.-Spenser...the valiant, poet-detective....and his best friend Hawk.

Vachss, Andrew-Burke....the ex-con who has a soft spot for righting wrongs with abused kids.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Right now I'm reading Stone Cold by David Baldacci. My copy was personalized and signed by the author and I got it as a Christmas gift.

Great stuff, guys. Makes me want to go back to several authors I've read a time or two but didn't stick with. Definitely want to check out Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers. Guess I hadn't realized it was a book, and just read some reviews online. A coworker is supposed to be making me copies of the series on DVD.

I read a lot. Upwards of 200 books a year. Currently I'm reading the Southern Victory series by Harry Turtledove.
Sounds like we have something in common. I'll order 4-5 books, they'll come over the course of a few days, get read as fast as they come in, and a few days later I'll be checking the mailbox, thinking "don't I have some more books on the way?"

I've read Turtledove's The Guns of the South. Pretty cool idea for a book. When I first shot a Mk19(that's a full auto grenade launcher for anyone who doesn't know) in the Army, I immediately fantasized of pulling up on the battlefield at Gettysburg in a HMMV and demolishing the Federal position on Cemetery Ridge.
Yeah...I know the war's over:)

Reading a few now...

"Sweet Jesus, I Hate Bill O'Reilly" by Joseph Minton Amann and Tom Breuer
"Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae" by Steven Pressfield
"50 Reasons to Hate the French: Or Vive la Difference" by Jules Eden and Alex Clarke

Haven't read Guns of the South yet. It's not part of the series, but the plot sounds interesting enough. I'll read it when I done with the others. I was going to start American Front last night, but picked up another book from the pile instead. For me Turtledove's work requires time to commit to the book. And I wanted to knock down a couple quickie books instead.

Similiar to what you said about the Mk19 on a HMMWV, there's an episode of the Twilight Zone where a Sherman Tank crew gets taken back to Custer's Last Stand, if my memory is correct.

Of course I had the same feeling at the Alamo, thinking, a couple of M-60's on the corners...

Hmm, a lot of Ian Fleming (original Bond books) and Michael Crichton at any given time.
Currently Thunderball.
Recently read some pretty good fiction based off a video game- the Halo Books The Fall of Reach and First Strike were very entertaining, especially the parts about ship to ship combat.

I'm not reading anything at the moment but some of my favorite books/characters are -
Musashi (Miyamoto Musashi)
Starship Troopers (Juan Rico)
The Count of Monte Cristo (Edmond Dantes)

It's a far cry from some of the tactical/historical stuff already posted- but I just picked up some more P.G. Wodehouse today- Big fan of Jeeves/Bertie Wooster, et al...

Anything by Dennis Lehane, Lee Child, or Elmore Leonard. Just finished Nature Girl by Carl Hiassen(?sp). Work has been slow so I've been reading to escape the b.s. Have read The Perfect Storm , By the Sword by Richard Cohen, The Places in Between by Rory Stewart , Echo Burning by Lee Child and Nature Girl since Jan. 11., on work time.
