Indeed, he wrote it. Kris was desperate to sell it to Johnny cash but could never get through to him. So, being a veteran, Kris commandeered a helicopter, flew to Johnny Cash's house, set it down on the front lawn, handed a demo tape to Johnny and said something along the lines of "You're gonna buy this song from me." Apparently it worked, broke Kris into the music industry, and the FAA didn't clap him in irons. Different time.
