What'd you score in the AlaskaGanzaaaaaa?

Jerry, is the choil on the mil overrun 511s different than the standard? From the pics it looks like its a little different...

It is, it's the prototype style choil. The production run curved it to create a rounded choil, on the proto's it went straight back.

I scored a Rodent 9, pretty excited about that. I also pulled the trigger on my first Busse (not from the ganza though)... it's secondary market but I'm stoked! It's going to be a good knife week.

Does this mean that the choil will technically be usable on the mil overruns?

.

Personally I like the looks of the proto style a lot better. In the proto style you get a broad flat area to place your finger that includes a bit of the gaurd. In the new style, the choil looks way to small to be comfortable, and it doesn't seem to make the design any better than it was. You get a less-tall area to grip with your index finger, but in a much tighter space next to the edge. If I bought one it would have to be the proto style to be worth it.

And more specifically, the military overrun 511. The other proto's seem to have a bit of lip on the handle gaurd that makes the 'flat choil' recessed a bit. The pic jerry posted of the military overrun looks like a trully straight shot from the edge of the handle gaurd into the flat choil area. I'd rather have a flat platform than a slight lip, and much moreso than a very small recessed choil.

and of course, if I had it my way I'd have someone at the shop grind the edge back to make it completely choiless, as I don't think the choils on this thing ad anything to the quality or usability of the knife.

In the new style, the choil looks way to small to be comfortable

This was one of the reasons I turned my 511 over on the exchange, almost immediately. It felt almost as though the size and shape of the choil were conspiring to try and force my finger into the blade edge. I agree that the proto choil looks better. I hadn't realized that there had been a change made. Sharp eyes, man...

You scored in the recent Alaskaganza.

27A FSH Variant :thumbup::thumbup:

Edit: I might have a new 'Grail'...

I got the one I wanted 10A which is really cool because I am going to Alaska next year for my 50th.....

HBTM

How in the world I scored 3A Tank Buster Variant I don't know !!! I sent my email 10 minutes after the go button was posted , I guess pure luck ! I got the email and called Amy and she told me that there was only one knife like that ,,, Pure luck !!!!!

I got 21A - the SAR 8 with the black G10 and burl handle.

Promised that I would sell one of my existing 6" Busses to part fund it, if I won it, though. Any thoughts on what would get a better price in the secondary market - a Skinny ASH (black canvass on jungle green) or a SAR 6 (black paper)?

Grab a 'Gold' membership (or you can't sell anything - only $25) and throw them both up for sale. Post in the thread that 'you are only looking to part with one, so when one of them sells, you will be withdrawing the other' - I see it all the time; there is nothing wrong with it. FWIW, they both are nice knives, but the SAR-6 is one of my favorite blades so my guess would be that one sells first - just my $.02, YMMV...

Very nice SAR-8 score  - that was one of my choices too; however, I was lucky enough to score my 1st choice, 27A FSH Variant! I'm a sucker for saber-grinds...;):)

Thanks for the advice. I think the SAR 6 is in many ways the better all round knife - especially with the satin, convexed blade. But, every time I pick it up, I just feel the blade should be longer. The Skinny ASH needs some serious edge re-profiling, but I'm probably tending towards keeping that as a user - a more classic Busse blade shape to complement the new SAR 8.

Sorry - probably going off topic with this!

Then you are going to LOVE that SAR-8 you have coming!

FWIW, I have a SAR-6 & 8 and also an ASH, but my ASH is FAT (.330”), not skinny. I'm not sure which one I'd give up to compliment my SAR-8... If I had to choose, my ASH would probably be the one to go... the SAR-6 is such a great knife, IMO.

Scored a couple of Mil Overrun 511s - 1 for me and 1 for my oldest son's b-day (I hope he likes it :D).
