Unless everyone got their knives for free... No one is paying taxes on this stuff
There is a difference between "no one is" and "no one should be". Not all that file tax returns are masters of their preparation and execution.

Frankly, I find the whole thing tiresome...and I wish my former employer, Uncle Sam, would look elsewhere for his entertainment and tomfoolery.

I mean, a few folks here have already stated that they've gotten a tax form, and unless you are able to prove you sold at a loss....then you're going to owe, on knives you'd already purchased. 🤷

Exceptionally accurate.

Fair point. That was bit of... hyperbole? Exaggeration?... Something on my part. Apologies.

Your former employer should turn those binoculars around. Im sure there is some low hanging fruit there. But that is probably a subject for another time.

While not everyone is a master of preparation and execution that is their choice, and I'd not like to fund their lack of interest in developing themselves at a 30% markup.

Again, I would have to disagree. The tax code is both huge and complicated...even (oftentimes) with the assistance of software. I know many otherwise intelligent folks who simply cannot cope with it. "Choice" may not be the right term...as everyone is wired differently...and, not everyone can afford the sort of professional assistance that others can. So, there are several factors in this continuum, imho.

I realize I'm playing the devil's advocate here...but the reason for that is that sweeping generalities are still generalities.

I agree there are several factors. Let me narrow my scope back to my specific target group as you expanded my comments to somehow include the entire tax code and every working citizen in America.

If someone on the forums has an inflated PayPal G&S price associated with an item they are selling relative to the FF price... AND their justification for that is "taxes", then yes they should be able to navigate the tax code for that specific scenario. They are using it to prop up an inflated price so the onus is on them at that point to understand what that means.

We're well beyond "whatever happened to net prices?"

Done here.

Caveat emptor.
