What's a Emerson Rhino?

again, AFAIK none of the rhinos had bolsters or micarta they were all G10,

there are old & new customs with G10 & old & new bolstered w/micarta that it has G10 handles and is custom doesnt mean its old, or new, its not an indicator of age is my point, and i also dont think he ever used anything but the green micarta in anything but a few cases, i know i have seen a few with black micarta, IIRC i saw a '6 with black micarta and a toothpick in the handle (like a SAK) but thats not a common thing at all,

as rare as rhinos are i doubt anyone that has one is wondering "what is this" lol, they know what it is.

The bolstered ones are rare. Here is a link to a pic of a bolstered green micarta one, you may need to copy it into your browser window it will not link directly. The album owner has a nice Emerson collection. On top of it being a bolstered micartta Rhino it also has the Diamond logo which was only used for a short while. My understanding is that the die (stencil or whatever is used to make the marking) was damaged and since the Specwar style logo was more popular with Emerson fans he went back to that one and never resumed with the diamond logo. The Diamond logo is legit I purchased a CQC8 in a lottery from Ernest himself that has the diamond logo.

yeah thats the 1st bolstered rhino i have seen/heard of, thanks for the link.

i've seen a few with the diamond logo though and heard the same story as to why he disco'd that, i always thought the diamond logo was funky FWIW, in fact i passed on a '6 only because of the diamond logo.

imho after looking at the pic in the link its obvious about the reverse grip slash the throat technique with this knife, i dont know that it would work any better than other designs at this but its the only way i see to use the thing,

That's not the technique for throat-cutting. It's very different than that with the Rhino. Also, the handles are not G10, it's black micarta. It was never a production or semi-custom piece, full custom only.

Mods to other Emerson production knives were done by a few makers, but noone has ever gotten them right.

There are 2 custom unbolstered Emersons out there with green linen micarta handles made by Ernest in the mid-90's...a CQC5 and a CQC6.

Welcome to the Emerson forum, Cyclura! Thanks for the input.

ok i'll bite whats the technique?

i think some of the rhinos were G10 not micarta, if ya are saying all customs are micarta thats not correct i have had a custom '8 that was G10 myself.

I always thought it was made to be a doubled edged folder so it gave you more options rather than a specific use.

You could easily split a neck a few ways with one of those boys

Nothing I'd disclose here.

Some of the protos were G10. I have never seen G10 on a custom 8. Custom 7,9, and 11:yes.

ETA.
Yes, I stand corrected on the 8. Been so long since I'd seen one I forgot what they looked like!
Thanks Haze!

There is actually a G-10 custom 8 on the exchange here just now,
I thought about picking it up but there is one or two things I want before another 8.

As to the uses for a Rhino I think any one who has any idea of how to use a knife
would find its potential uses rather obvious.

It's obvious in that it appears to be a meat slasher. Technique based on the individual.

Looking at a picture of the Rhino, I don't think it would help all that much with throat slashing.
It would mean cutting with the spine of the blade, which puts pressure against the liner far too much for my liking.
I doubt it would be that much hassle to just roll the knife in the hand to slash with the primary edge. It doesn't take very much effort to do that at all.

Ok guys, first off, I guess many of you are not knife nuts. If you were, you would be upset by the bad rap the Rhino is getting. I am the guy who has spent a fortune on the Rhino and it is well worth it. The reason it is so expensive and sought after (Emerson makes the most valuable folders out there, yes even more valuable than Onion, at least Emerson's dress version of his knives) is because of the grind. It is hard enough to put a zero grind chisel edge on one side of a knife, now try two sides. Secondly, the knife was designed for the special forces as a sentry removal tool (forward grip throat slitting, from the rear). Hence the need for the edge on the upper portion of the blade.

my Avatar is a Reese Weiland interpretation of the knife. Attached are the actual knife. It is a true marvel of design. I use my weiland Rhino every day for work. But, Emerson's Rhino is a simple but difficult design to pull off.

Enjoy the pics!!! They are not mine. Mine has checkered micarta, and only three of those exist out of only less than 2 dozen ever made. Mr. Emerson may not make anymore, we'll see.

I don't think it's getting a bad rap at all. I(and others) just wouldn't pay that much for that knife, but I don't mind if some people wish to.
I will say that I don't think it's so super for sentry removal, due to cutting with the back of the blade, but the liner does look nice and thick.
If I were going to cut with the spine of a liner-lock knife, I might just pick that one.
And I'd say I'm quite the knife knut, judging by the percentage of my income which has gone to knives(sometimes approaching-or exceeding-10% of total income).

Forgot to mention, this knife (the Rhino) almost completes my Custom Emerson collection.

Here is what i have so far:

Viper 3 (MV3)
Viper 5 (MV5)
CQC6
Super CQC7
CQC8
CQC9
CQC10
CQC11
CQC12
CQC13
CQC14
CQC15
Emerson Commander
All the ECA Knives

All of the above are custom Emersons with bolsters (even the CQC9) except for the ECA knives. it has taken me years to get these and I am still looking for a few others to round out my collection:

Viper 1
Viper 2
Viper 4
CQC5 Found One!
CQC16
Persian
Sark
Specwar

Not bragging, but stating that if you have a passion and know what you want, you can find it if you are patient. I started collecting in 1993.

Thanks for the pics

You sure have a nice collection going by that list :)

nice pics. whoever's getting those Rhinos is really lucky. It certainly is a grail, although I wouldn't and couldn't pay $6k. Unless I were a millionaire, in which case, I would since that is a grail.

I thought like you up until about a year ago. I looked at all of the production and custom knives I had that I kind of liked and thought to myself, which knife would I prefer to have more. I then sold off almost all of my production knives, and this led to me getting the Rhino.

I am now strictly a custom knife collector.
