What's A Good EDC knife for protection?

a knife for protection? i suggest walking away from any confrontation. people are nuts these days and will blow you away for something stupid in traffic.

Training is a must before considering a knife for defense. Unfortunately, an untrained person with a knife in a self defense situation will most likely have that knife used on them.

Are you assuming the attacker is trained in how to use a knife? If not he would then be untrained and could then be easily be disarmed and you could then reuse the knife you originally had!

You are absolutely right about that, training is necessary to use any weapon effectively, especially when you are under stress

Recently I read in the local paper where a dude busted into a house and the man who lived there was able to get a kitchen knife and stabbed the burger a few times before the burglar ran off... he didn't have any training...

I am not saying to not train, I am saying the "no knife unless you are trained" seems a little silly...

As stated elsewhere, situational awareness and avoidance of potentially dangerous areas and people are your first line of defense. Pepper spray should be the second. However, you have to train with it to be effective. If someone attacks you, you won't be able to deploy the spray and likely will not even remember you have it with you, if you haven't trained with it. A knife could be used as a third line of defense, but it is highly unlikely you'd need anything beyond the above mentioned awareness, avoidance and spray. Get spray, learn how to operate the can and the spray pattern. Have it ready in hand in higher risk situations and avoid those situations if at all possible. If you want a knife anyway, look at the Spyderco Delica and Chicago models.

Big Macs are nasty...:D

But then as you are untrained he would take the knife again and could use it against you, like some kind of Abbott and Costello knife fighting vaudeville act.

The way I see it, just me, just my opinion, as I'm not by any means an internet knife fighting expert.

A Sharp stick is better than nothing, basically something is better than nothing.

If you read most of the huge amount of threads on this subject it seems to come down to.

Run, you have no chance.
Don't put yourself in those situations.
get training, but if you use the training you'll probably go to jail because you have training.
Get a gun and get training.(the training and jail thing doesn't seem to go with this one)
carry a cane, you can carry that anywhere, oddly enough if you get training with it you'll be fine as its just a cane.

I don't personally get my self defense training or advice from the internet, but what I've gotten from it is, run, if you can't, hand over your knife, wallet and virginity if you don't have training.

good luck get a bigger knife, and Illinois is setting up concealed carry certifications now.
jump through the hoops and get one,
and get real advice and training from someone that's not an expert on the internet.

Have a nice day:D

Yeah, Filipino martial arts are a joke and no one should carry a walking stick because it's not useful.

Ah, well you should have just told her to learn Filipino martial arts then. Then carry around a super practical ladies walking stick everywhere she goes.

I don't think no one is speaking in absolute terms when talking about training for knives. It just increase the odds. Even with so-called 'training', there is no guarantee that the training received is adequate to deal with or applicable to the situation.

Unless we are talking about military, I think anyone who is reading this aren't intend to go out and kill people, and face jail time consequently; so I agree with post #2, no conflict is the best conflict. I am sure this holds true even for people are highly trained and armed, working as secret service for the president.

I'm right with you, but I said "effectively" - especially with such a small blade

Check out the Kimber pepper blaster2.Small, light and has a ok range. If a knife makes you feel better/ more confidant get one. Predators sense weakness and fear. I would go for a Spyderco Civilian if I had to use one for self defense. Stay safe!

I'm not going to assume that you are trained, or untrained. This is the knife I can think of that meets your size requirement. ESEE Candiru, it's a small, easy to carry little fixed blade.

No, I'm assuming that an attacker is more mentally prepared for the confrontation, or so f'd in the head that they'll take a slice or stab to the hand to get what they want.
An old roommate of mine and his girlfriend were the victims of a home invasion where he was able to ward of the attacker with a kitchen knife. In the process however he cut his fingers so badly, he was unable to play guitar anymore.

I carry two small pikal knives as backup to a firearm.

A collapsible baton is one of the most effective self defense weapons. It's concealable, and with practice, rapidly deployable.
Unfortunately, they are illegal to carry in most places...but!

Carry a good edc flashlight! They are effective medium range deterrants and capable close quarters blunt force weapons.

Get a flashlight! They are fantastic tools. I recommend the Surefire LX2 lumamax

But he's still alive to listen to good guitar music. ;)

Mace is always a safe bet for people or animals since you won't get into any legal trouble. If you MUST carry a self-defense knife, get something with that purpose in mind. The Spyderco Szabo or Civilian would be my top two.

Without training, the only type of knife I can think of that would fit that requirement is a single edged push dagger. Held properly, you literally just have to extend your arm to stab things. Punching someone is easy, and more effective with a knife poking out between your fingers. If you get one of the little cold steel ones that measure 1" or 1.5", you can also rest easy knowing that you aren't going to kill someone if you have to use it (unless the offender is too stupid to seek medical attention, that is.)

Tazer Gun is better than a 2.5" knife. Knives are backup weapons. A small 2.5" blade is not going to do much as a deterrent and to hit anything vital would be much more difficult than a 4" blade. Get a carry permit and you'll be fine. You can carry a large knife, tazer or a gun.
