What's A Good EDC knife for protection?

@killgar

What you say makes a lot of sense. I suppose that despite the fact that I carry a knife, and would be capable of using it as a weapon, I have always thought that I would not choose to use it as such in any situation. I guess in the most extreme of circumstances, where you felt like you life was in imminent danger if you did not resort to using your blade as a weapon, then this training might come in handy, but the truth is you probably made some poor decisions along the way to be in that situation in the first place. I just think there are more useful skills to learn than knife fighting at the end of the day. For me it has only ever been a hobby.

As far as stick fighting is concerned, it is a transferable skill that has a lot of practical applications. It's part of learning to 'improvise' weapons, another skill more useful than knife fighting imo.

If it's not too private, I would like to know more about your experience of using a knife for self defense. It is quite rare to hear about self defense with knives from someone who has actually done it in real life so I feel it would be relevant information as long as you feel comfortable with disclosing it.

I imagine that perhaps we agree more than we realize. And where we don't agree, that's ok. I believe that men of respect can respectfully agree to disagree.

As far as my personal experience- It was night and I was on a deserted street. I had just finished changing a flat tire on the car I was driving and was putting the tools back into the trunk. While my attention was focused on getting the tools squared away I didn't notice that a guy had come up behind me with a baseball bat. He hit me across the back, slamming me down into the trunk and then I fell to the ground. He swung at me a few more times but I was too close to the car and instead of hitting me he hit the cars bumper. So he started kicking me. The blow from the bat inflicted excruciating pain and left me all but incapacitated. As a result, I had no chance to run and my ability to fight back was extremely limited. While the guy was kicking me my survival instinct took over and I pulled out a Gerber Mark1 that I was carrying in my waistband. I guess he didn't see me pull the knife, it was dark and I was partially under the car, and after the beating he had just inflicted on me he probably thought I was down for the count. He paused for a moment and stood over me catching his breath and at that moment I stabbed him in the calf. He screamed in pain and started running/limping away. I managed to drag myself out from under the car, got myself up and into the car and drove myself to the hospital (we didn't have cell phones back then). I have no idea what the guys motive was, after hitting me he was saying something but as a result of the shock, fear, stress, and pain, I wasn't able to make it out, or I just couldn't remember. Twenty-two years later and I still have back problems as a result and the occasional bad dream.

There wasn't anything cool or exciting or manly about the experience. I didn't employ any impressive, fancy, highly-trained knife-fighting moves. It was an ugly desperate attempt to survive. It was more frightening and stressful than words can describe. Lying on the ground, injured, and being kicked, I was terrified for my life and felt as helpless and powerless as a child. Using a knife to defend oneself is the furthest thing from "cool" that there is. But it's a lot better than dying.

I think killgar's experience using his knife for self-defense is very instructive.

1. Before drawing his knife, he had already been attacked -- not just threatened -- by someone wielding a weapon capable of lethal force. Clearly, he was entitled to use serious countermeasures to save life and limb.

2. He was lucky in having a fixed-blade knife that was easily deployed. The best "self-defense" knife in the world is no good stuck in your pocket.

3. He defended himself in a non-lethal fashion and then did not pursue a fleeing attacker. Again, the proper behavior in establishing a self-defense legal defense had he needed to do so.

Finally, I'd add that, for myself, had I seen an attacker approaching (an opportunity that killgar did not have), I would have preferred the tire iron I had just used to fix my flat to my knife.
