Whenever I head to the great outdoors or even deep sea fishing I always carry my little survival kit. Some folks here I read make a little survival kit out of an altoids tin. I found something perfect for me, it's a plastic soap container. It's a good size, a bit bigger than the altoids tin and thus carries more than the altoids tin without being cumbersome. I also carry (with some redundancy to what's in my survival kit,) some things on a lanyard around my neck. On my neck lanyard I have:
1. Light my fire firesteel (the smaller one)
2. The striker that came with it.
3. stainless steel credit card sized mirror
4. thin profile whistle or small aluminum whistle. Some aluminum whistles come with a very small compartment. I got that one and in the compartment I managed to fit 2 small gold hooks with 20 feet of spiderwire fishing line and 2 small fishing flies!
5. small knife (one that has lanyard hole) in my case, it is a very light spyderco ladybug.
Seems cumbersome, but it really is not and I feel better having some extra things with me just in case anything happens to my survival kit. If I lose my survival kit I can at least make fire, potentially fish for food, or use the spiderwire as a snare, signal for help (day or night with the firesteel or mirror) and make myself heard. Don't think I could do much with a ladybug but better than nothing if I lost my main knife along with the survival kit. I know I could at least skin something or gut a fish.
So, what's on your lanyard when you are out in the great outdoors?
