Whats as tough as Strider folders????

I’m more than sure Strider folders provide you only pretense of strength in this matter. The reason is that nor blade neither handle are not the weakest points loading folding knife across blade plane, in another words using it for prying. The most critical place is pivot pin and I do not see why Strider folders should be stronger in this matter than over brands.
Alright man, you asked for it. :)

Just kidding. But have you handled a Strider before?

I don't have a real Strider folder, but I've handled one before. And if my Buck-Strider folder is any indication, the pivot should be incredibly strong. The pivot lug is 7.8mm wide chunk of steel with a ~3mm inner diameter for the pivot screws. My armchair knifemaker opinion is that the pivot would hold until the force of prying snaps the pivot lug clear out of the hole in the titanium liner, probably causing the head of one of the two pivot screws to snap. I've stabbed this thing full force into a wooden door, pried like hell, and even taken a hammer to the butt of the knife to jam it into wood.

I've only got one complaint, and it's not directly related to the operational safety of the knife. A slight protrusion on the blade (the finish isn't completely smooth right there) is causing wearing of the titanium stop pin, which causes the liner to engage a bit to the right of middle. Once the initial dent has been established in the stop pin, though, I haven't noticed any further wearing. It's kind of like a balisong's cups and pins. I don't think I'll ever live to see the liner travel all the way over, but if that ever happens, I'll just switch out the stop pin with one of the two other spacers in the handle.

Whoops, didn't really answer your question there, Aniketos.

Maybe you should try out a Buck-Strider first? Relatively cheap, and it'll give you a taste of Strider engineering. I handled an AR at a knife show, but I didn't think I needed one since I've already got my Buck-Strider.

The one thing that was noticeably better in the AR was the grip. The rounded G10 sides and the less boxy shape made the grip much more comfortable.

Now why didn't I think of the Buck-Strider folders? I have one, and it is pretty darn close to my AR. As far as strength is concerned I believe that the Buck-Strider would be almost as strong. The only real complaint I have with the Buck version is that the fit and finish isn't quit as good as that on the real Strider. The Striders have better ergos as the G-10 is rounded, and the knife is a bit less boxy.

If you want a Strider strong, built like a tank knife, but can't afford a Strider then the Buck would be a good alternative.

Money really doesnt matter ... to some point.. for about 450 dollars or so.. anything out there gunna get me a strider quality or strider strength.. only reaso nwhy i say *strider strength* etc is because everyone here basicly agrees that strider is toughest? I dunno.. I dont really care if it is a strider I just want something I wont be able to push to some limitations

well also I just wanna add... when I had my microtechs.. god such beautiful knives.. super strong locking and nice materials.. but i wouldnt dream of using it to nasty crap or really heavy duty things.. I didnt wanna run the risk of damaging it. My dream knife would be:::

1) practicly indestructable.
2) 4 inch plain blade folder
3) thick stock( I dont like puny crap)
4) something that if you needed to REALLY to pry, gouge and just do stuff that only GOOD metal would do.

5) built like a tank

does this knife exsist or should I go back to sleep?

Any questions?:D

AlphalphaPB,
I have handled BUCK Strider collaborations some times at different knife shows and considered them overweighted, overpriced, uncomfortable to hold and work with and – first of all – pretty mediocre cutters. There are no wonders, the same result would be obtained if someone would try to compile car with tank – it would be overweighted, overpriced, uncomfortable to drive with, it wouldn’t be any good car and still it wouldn’t be a tank. Each folding knife is the tool for cutting only and no one is any good for prying, Strider knives are not exclusion. I don’t see any need to pay $150-200-250 for knife-folding-crowbar because I can get very good conventional folding knife for $100 and good conventional crowbar for few bucks.

BTW, there are pretty accomplished picture of forces and loads what is generated in pivot pin area when a folder is loaded across blade plane, for prying. It is very hard to predict what would broke first and which way. The one thing is doubtless for me – this is the most critical place and no one folder is any good crowbar (seems I’m starting to replicate my own thoughts :))

Proposing Outdoor Edge Magna I didn’t have in my mind that it could be any good crowbar. It is just the folder, however it is overbuilt pretty much (although still in common sense limits), able to take good deal of accidental abuse, it is comfortable to hold and carry and – first of all – it still cuts well.

:( I was a bad boy tonite.................. I had some money i should have saved for guitar payments. B-b-but SOMEONE here has to post tadgear.com and their pre-orders and make me spend that money :(

Anyway- enough of my crap, I am really happy because THIS is what I decided on :D :D

Boy I can't wait for these to get to tadgear.. itll get to my house just 2 realllllyyyy long days after.

Wow, thats a really cool looking grind. I would think it might actually make the blade stronger than the regular flat grind!

Either way that is one nice knife.

NEWSFLASH for those who don't know already: The new Buck Striders will have rounded edges on G10. Serrated versions will also be available. Don't know when the new ones will be available.

You should handle one and check out the thickness of the liner.

I hope buck will offer newer buck strider designs in the future.

If the new Extrema Ratio folders are as tough as they look, then they are the meanest things out there. Period.

The TOPS folders have a good history of taking some incredible abuse, particularly prying action. Do a search on them.

Aniketos - See, don't you feel much better now? You're usually better off to get what you want, instead of trying to find a substitute.

I do like the grinds on that AR!
