Ages ago I messed up this Benchmade blade (D2) sharpening it. I finally decided I had enough skill to make a replacement. I have a bunch of different steel floating around including matching D2. So what did I do? I ordered a piece of precision ground W2 from Aldo and put a hamon on it! One because I wanted a unique blade and two because I can run W2 close to 65 Rockwell. I'm just deciding on if I want to leave the original scales understated for shoot for some exotic wood (might go hickory) or fatcarbon.bm_replacementa.jpg20260710_173259.jpg

Here's my latest attempt at a chef's knife. I'm getting closer to where I want to be.

I will say that this hollowed out area of the handle for my little finger is a bad idea. Don't do this. It makes it hard to use my fingers to make the knife vertical in my hand. It causes the knife to want to be held at an angle. My next one won't have this area hollowed out.

I've been working on my grinding room for the past month, among other things, and I finally got it more or less done today. Happy dance up in here!

felt awesome to fire up the grinder today! It's been a long wait.
I've had this lignum vitae timber for about 20 years, and actually made my very first two knives using it for the handles. This scrap piece is my new slicker now.
ground about 2/5s of this piece into dust, a good test for the dust filter system. Found a couple breaches which are easy fixes, so looks like I'm pretty much back in business.

Congrats!!!👌.....That should wear in nicely....Need a pik after 3-5 cows...😉.....

that slick left the grinder at 120 grit, I'll finish polishing it by hand

A few things underway. Got five AEBL kitchen knives going through grinding, a couple of big bushcraft/small camp knives getting handles sanded, and some other random blade works going on.
Particularly enjoying the little dial thickness gauge for checking S grind mid hollow thickness
First use of the Contender 36” platen
