my laser engraver guy dropped the blades off yesterday, and I got the secondary bevels all ground. Now, the blade are all tucked in nice and cozy, with the tangs exposed for tapering

Does every steel behave quite a bit differently with the laser?
 
I've never used smoked oak before so I thought I better test how it reacts to a drop of water after a hardwax oil has been applied
Well I don't think I'll be using it this way for kitchen knives: A drop even if quickly wiped off lightens the wood in that place drastically, the oil I used was "Osmo Hardwax High Solid"

I'll try Danish Oil to see if it's just an oil issue but I don't think it will behave any better because Oil finishes aren't completely waterproof and in this case my best guess is the dark colour of smoked oak is just easy to lighten with water
