Why can't distributors sell Emerson any more? Is there something going on that so few are being made?

From Ernie himself:

“Two big things have happened at Emerson Knives over that last year.

The first is that we have taken the final leap of faith as a manufacturing business.

We have transitioned into retail sales only. The only place you can now purchase a new Emerson Knife is directly from us. This was a huge decision for us and it was possible only because of the support from people like all of you, and it has given us the freedom to really steer the company in the direction that we want.

Then, as a result of this new “freedom” I realized that I needed to seriously evaluate our manufacturing process. It’s funny how many things become “institutionalized” after 30 years and they become “that’s the way we do it” rather than “this is the best way to do it.” I tore this company apart. It started with numbers and hours of data analysis and models before it finally hit the floor about two months ago. And it was brutal. I have been putting in almost 80 hours a week since last June to bring this to fruition. But it has paid off. We are now running so streamlined and efficiently that it seems like an entirely new company. We have the best crew we’ve ever had – all are true team players, and Rachael, Megan, Mary, Lucas and Danny have amazed me with their enthusiasm, expertise and efforts to make this possible.

As you can already see we have more knives, more models, more “special editions” and more new knives than we’ve ever had in the past. I hope you enjoy them.

This new reality has also given me the freedom and time I needed to do more of the projects that I’ve had to put on hold for the last couple of years.”

Could be one or more reasons.
Knock offs sold on other sites. Buy it from them or it's a fake.
Can't keep up with demand from dealers so selling direct keeps the profits in house.
Other.

Great, no more Emersons for Canada... Unless they are willing to tighten the pivot like crazy, but I doubt I'll ever see a box to tick for that in the Shipping options (i.e Ship to Canada - Pivot will be overtighten so hard no one ever will be able to flick it open onehandedly).

Edit: Shipping to US only.

Emerson has Canada in the drop down for shipping, and there is a notes section where you could try and request a tightened pivot… but I would phone in that sort of request due to the high cost.

The dropdown disappear on the final ordering page.

Thank you for this. So is it just they think they will make more profit by cutting out the dealers? Wouldn't there by additional advertising costs eating that profit without dealers doing that for them?

Are there any other production companies that only sell direct?

I couldn’t answer any of this for you, I just copy/pasted what I found. There’s an entire thread about this “somewhere else”.

As far as I know Quiet Carry only sells direct. If a brand is popular enough the products do their own marketing because of the nature of social media these days. It doesn't seem like a bad idea for a brand in this position based on the steep discount dealers get buying wholesale. My only question is does Emerson still command enough attention from the market? I feel like they were very popular for a little while, but they haven't really done much to stay relevant lately.

They have few appealing sort of new (to me) models like the Seax, a larger size A-100 and I think CQC-7 ( on my list) and another sort of advertised as "rescue" knife - the P-Sark.
Overland Renegade folder also looks good to me, as well as the spear point Sheepdog, which isn't new knife but I like it a lot and I'm on the fence if this will be my second Emerson that I'll buy or the Seax...
That one is designed with input of Colonel Dave Grossman if this matters to anyone, I like his well known book and I think he'd have what to add to already good Emerson design.
They also have two new, to me at least, cheapo folders sub-$100 under Hard Wear name, didn't remember their titles simply because I'll never buy "Emerson" with hole opener...
It is really disappointing to see them selling the coffee instead concentrating on the knifes. I met few times their staff at the SHOT in LV,
and they were not very friendly to anybody approaching their isle, that wasn't movie star or known person in the industry like Steve Segal or Jim Yeager...
Still, I'll buy Emerson again, just don't like their models that are not chisel grind and they don't do custom order as far as I know...
