What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

After a recent conversation with another customer, I am experimenting with how close I can get everything. Basically, I want to try and see how small a ricasso area I can put in between handle material and cutting edge. I had been nervous to cut it so close in the past, wanting a margin of error, but I might have been overly concerned...

Let's see, what is happening? Well for starters I am working hard to try and manage a second mail pickup this week. If things go well tomorrow, then some of these should be done and ready to go out, at which point I can call Canada Post to come pick up Friday.

What else?

I had a platen try to walk off the job. The glue I use just all of a sudden let go, un underneath my rapidly moving belt, I could see it started to slither its way out. So I turned off the machine, by the time it just plopped down into my hand.

So naturally, I did what I always do when it's platen change day, I cleaned up the gunk as best I could with a scraper and alcohol, flipped the platen over and hoped for a little more life out of it.

This is what I was working on when the platen tried to leave me:

This is going to be a hidden tang Bowie knife with OD green and black Suretouch handle scales. And it's going to be a monstrous cutter!

And I started a few more handles.

If I can, I'd like to try and get the black linen Micarta knife at the bottom ready to go for tomorrow, along with the Bowie.

The three with Suretouch, and the one with OD Micarta and orange liners will be offered up on the Knife Maker's for sale area tomorrow, ideally, or as soon as I get them finished. That way any that sell that night can also go out Friday. It's a tall order and I'll have to start early to get it all done, but my priorities are the Bowie and the black linen knife.

I slept on the design I used for the handle and realized I also needed a few more attachment points, in addition to the requested lanyard tube.

It's packaged up and ready to go. Just waiting for the mailman now.

Yessir. I still have a total of three runs I am awaiting back. .092 AEB-L, which has already shipped from Jarod and is in transit, .196 AEB-L, which contains your order, and .084 LC200N which contains a large order for Good Knife Co., a few neckers for others, as well as a couple extras. Those are the orders for which I received deposits. Aside from them, I also have 31 blanks in 8670 out for heat treatment with Andy.

Also, I've consulted with Jarod ( JTknives JTknives ) and learned that even though he is slowing down the plasma cutting side of his business, I can still cut out blanks myself and send them to him for heat treatment. So when I get a bit more caught up, and funds permit, I will look at setting up another run of stainless.

I had to put them on hold because I thought one piece was lacking in my shop, but managed to find just enough of the right sanding drums to put a little texture on micarta. The short supply of those catches up fast when the ones on order take long to arrive.

And those three other knives just getting started are 1/8" 8670 for the same gentleman.
