What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

not everything would get dull except maybe the tip after a lot of suture snipping

I was wondering how the geometry on a lot of these were basically still perfect until the tip where there would be some very slight rolling (or chipping?) at the tip. I wondered how cutting soft human tissue could be responsible for that... That explains it!

I ground the surface layer of red G10 of this suretouch, then ground off the black rubber layer, and then another G10 layer, to compensate for the thickness of the natural canvas liners. Then I rough cut some hollows into the liners to lighten the overall piece. Then I gave the scale some subtle convexity, before using my dremel to create a diagonal stripe pattern for extra grip, as though a suretouch handle with the rubber layer on top needed it. This is Red Rhino, a one-off, who will be soon joining a menagerie of like-colored animals in Colorado.

Very nice! Knife and sheath.

David:
That looks great! I really appreciate the thought and time you put into the handles. When doing precision or hard cutting, or when it is cold, wet, snowy, or when wearing gloves you really rely on a good design and good materials. The prettiest knife in the best steel is worthless if you can’t control it or hang on to it.

Happy New Year everyone!

That rhino looks sharp but I'm glad I saved my money for A Rainy Day USA 😏

Now on to the real question...

I was just in the garage batoning up a dozen pallet boards for the solo stove and I can't help but wonder if magnacut or 8670 would be the way to go for a 5.5" - 6" wood processing and ect... knife. Stainless vs carbon doesn't concern me. Yes it'll get wet. Yes I'll rub it down with food grade mineral oil. I'll do food prep with it too and I do love a good patina. I imagine magnacut may hold the edge a bit longer but 8670 should be easy to resharpen and is tough as nails (tougher than nails?). I don't mind sharpening at all. I'm going to be in the .187 - .211 stock thickness range. This will be a heavy xl mix of the Canadian belt knife and an Lt wright northern hunter. Or an... Eastern belt hunter?? If you will.

I know I could ask the open forum or hit the search button but I like the community in here and ultimately David is going to get stuck making it 😁. And hopefully he gets the holiday off so a mild discussion isn't to out of line until he gets back to work.... If it is please hit the delete key and I'll retype this out in your sub. Also I'd imagine everyone in here has at least one of his knives so opinions and criticism will be constructive.

The Speedy Weasel v0.9 and Bitty Bitey Birdie will love their new brother, Red Rhino.

But I don’t think they will mind if their cousin, the Badger Scout, has a blue micarta handle. It’s gunna have a mean streak as deep as the ocean.

8670
David also likes to use 15n20 which would be great too.
Skip magnacut for something else.

Is this a camp, garage, back yard knife?
Or are you wanting to carry it often?

Me personally, if you want something awesome for battoning have David make you something Thick (over .187" if possible) saber ground.
8-10" blade.
No clip.

I bet his suregrip handles with the rubber layers would be comfy.
Make the handle thick/egg shaped. Lots of palm support on top.

David's knives are tough.
Made to be used hard.

Second from the right is my DM beater

Thank you for your insight. I haven't played with 15n20 yet but I'm not opposed to it either, is that what yours is?

I stole the knife above the giveaway knife when nobody was looking. my daughter will have to share it with me as it's my first magnacut. I'm buying it for her but since she doesn't know it that means I can use it a bit too 😁 and she's 9 so she's still good at sharing (with me). I figure if she doesn't loose it along the way she will have it for life. Hopefully with some good memories attached. She has good retention of the special things I've given her. Squirrel... Sorry, back on topic.

Yes. It is all of the above. It will go all places. Atv, camper, long road trips. I normally like to carry a big knife or small hatchet with my 180mm or 360mm silky saw on adventures.

The magnacut is .187 the carbon is .211ish. I do like the idea of high saber for splitting but also a guided sharpener if needed. 7-8" would be the biggest I'd really want. I can normally do everything I "need" to with a 5.5" blade. I do sometimes use a firecraft 7 or Bk9 as the longer blade makes things quicker (don't have to line up my cut). The Bk9 is what it is and the FC7 just feels blah. No soul in either of them.

Now that beater of yours looks beautiful. I like that alot. I have/ a Spyderco Forester that looks and feels good but I try and keep that one in good shape for the wife. She latched onto it around 2007 and never let go. I need (want, crave, lust) something of my own that is more than just a tool, something... Precious...

Ok..... You've got it all right.
Idk you already had good big splitters.
I like 4-6" ones too for everyday stuff.

mine that David made is 8670. It was my first, but I've been reading about it for awhile, before when it Burst on the scene.

Now, I'm putting a lot of faith into it myself with a bunch I've bought.

*edit to add.
In my opinion....for a mid-sized knife, Canadian Belt knife. Id want thin. .125" thick blade. The whole reason of using a tough steel such as magnacut or 8670 is to go thin without it being delicate.

I like thin, slicey blades.
When I want/like thick blades it's because I want the weight for chopping.
Or for wedging during battoning, but then I'd want longer too.

No matter what you and David decide, I'm sure it will be Awesome.

I named my new one Rhino because the shape looks like a Rhino's horn, and it's Red.

Here is where things get weird. I just found out there are firecrackers with that same name, as someone posted them today with their knife in the "what are you carrying today thread".

CFB75DAF-0DFB-427E-960A-966F491D22AE.jpeg

Also in the same thread, I saw a folding knife with similar colored handles to those on my menagerie of animalistic knives.

So you're saying you need to aquire more pieces for the red rhino family photo?

Well, I'm not gunna blow it up with firecrackers for sure.

Yeah, I should have him make my Badger Scout with these handles to match, but I'm in LOVE with the BLUE denim-looking micarta on my Wharntastic, so I think I still need to add some color to the menagerie with that one. I feel a little bad because the Red Rhino was supposed to be David's personal knife, but he felt bad splitting up the family/animal kingdom. How bad woulds it be if we all chipped in to buy him his own DM knife that he is not allowed to sell?

I like that blue alot aswell. The one I have coming looks to be close to the same pattern as your rhino. The red white blue and grey isn't my normal but I like it. My daughter will love it. If it was in the blue she'd never get it.

It would be fun to get David his own knife if he's not aloud to choose it. He just has to wear it for a year. Especially now that he sold his prevail I'm sure we could come up with some fun conditions. Maybe 1 outside the box task per month. (I had to put a watch on the knife maker exchange so I don't miss that kind of post again. That prevail was the knife I originally came across and wanted of his.)

Unless you have a very specific consensus on a new design or something that enough of you really want to see made and tested hard... then maybe.

Maybe we need to start a thread? I could be in for sponsoring some steel and supply's. My thoughts are:

Steel: 8670, x .200"
Blade: 6" - 7"
oal ≤12".
High saber or flat grind.

My uses are camp duty, batoning up to 2-3" material but rarely chopping. Some kitchen work but I usually have a smaller knife on me. So business with some class.

I'd also in on something more EDC in a 5" .200" in 8670.

Bonus points if the handle is some color burlap or blue linen.
