What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Monday saw progress on the Wakizashi and the Little Lamb, Bleater and Bloss. It also saw my bicycle, which is my sole autonomous mode of transportation, aside from two feet and a heart beat, pass the point of no return into disrepair. Hence today was not a shop day, but I hired a man to take me into town, to Fontaine Source for Sports where I had set an appointment for my bike to be repaired (drivetrain rebuilt) by Ed, who is to bikes what Jarod Todd is to heat treatment. And Ben, the owner, whom I made a few knives for more than six years ago, when I was barely out of the gate and not even whisper on Bladeforums, and again last fall (an AEB-L and Suretouch Wharncliffe Prevail and Wharncliffe ring knife) was kind enough to help me offset some of the repair cost by purchasing Bitty Bitey Birdie Two in MagnaCut and Red Canvas Micarta.

Definitely looking forward to my ride to the shop tomorrow. It's been at least a year since I truly felt like I could put max effort into my peddle stroke, given the progressive deterioration of my casette and chain. Now I will be able to go all out without the annoying and energy wasting gear skipping that was growing more and more common. My rear wheel was also cracked and posing increased danger, and I hadn't noticed until Ed pointed it out, so he may have saved me from a catastrophic failure on the road. Many thanks again to Ed and Ben and the rest of the guys at Fontaine's who provided a fun and welcoming atmosphere.

Just for the record, as someone who's cracked numerous rims, they don't usually break catostrophically when cracked, they go out of true and the spoke pulls thru. I had a bad rash of rear wheels when I used to race back in the day... usually from sticks in spokes, crashing, or just being a fatty.

On man, cannot wait to see a set of these finished. I might have to set some pennies aside for a full set out of the next production run.

The gentleman who has ordered the set asked for a very cool handle configuration. I too am excited for when they will be ready.

Used the last part of my shop time tonight to make a new R&D knife with my code 4 reblade. It had too much blade play and I lost the pivot barrel anyway.

Would you maybe go back later and weld some more metal onto the end of the tang, to make it a full tang knife? Sort of like when you added metal to that Magnacut chef knife and then made the Itty Bitty Bitey Birdie with the remainder.

No. I don't own welding equipment, and don't know the first thing about how to do it.

Never happened. I made a tang housing out of Micarta/G10 just like with this knife.

I should add those chef knives had tangs much longer than this knife. This one is a test knife.

I bet it would still be pretty strong if you used a steel liner to sandwich the blade, and have those liners inset inside of something like mIcarta or carbon fiber scales.

Welding is simple, you make glue out of metal by added lots of electricity 🤣. My first welding instructor told us that and then he said the machine is adjustable so you dont do this.... then he turned the machine all the way up and stuck a 1/2" piece of jet rod through a 2" plate.
