What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

HHmmpppfff

Got up before 8 am, and I still find myself leaving for the shop at the same-ish time.... 🤷‍♂️
do that all the time. I wake up at 5 sometimes to go to work early..somehow time slips by me and I end up at work same them as always. when I look back at where the time went..I usually just moved slower on my tasks...it wasn't like I added extra things into my pattern.

Same here. It's not like I have a strict morning routine, but I've found that if I have too early a start I'll wind up being late for whatever it is I'm doing. That, or walk out of the house without something critical...

I pushed pretty hard last week to get a lot done in the shop, and I also ramped up my exercise. I have dialed back the shop work significantly this week, partly due to the heat, and also because I am performing new movements in my workouts that I have never done in my decades of the physical culture lifestyle. Despite having been fit for my whole adult life, I have periodically had issues with back pain, probably related to scoliosis, which (I never told you guys this before, I think) has very often caused me to not be able to find a comfortable sleeping position. Add in the fact that shop time and computer work both see me in a sort of hunched over, internally rotated body posture, and it means I have a lot of bad patterns to undo. I really don't like to complain about stuff if I can avoid it (haven't always had perfect success not complaining about stuff, so the least I can do is try spare you guys having to hear it here).

Just mentioning it so you know the reason this week has been less productive in the shop. Also, I am only allowing myself to slow down temporarily, and while the orders that are up are ones that have not had deposits put on them. The three knives I finished yesterday, well that thing that happens sometimes happened again, and despite the Kagistume looking great in the shop light, and natural light, in the apartment lighting I found some discoloration around the makers mark, which just means I need to hit it on the fine scotchbrite belt for another few passes, which is why the gentleman who is awaiting them has not heard from me just yet. So I will do that when I get to the shop later today (yes, it seems I am just an afternoons/evenings guy despite attempts to the contrary, you guys know that though.... doesn't mean I won't try again).

ANYWAY!!! Despite accumulated fatigue, I am making excellent progress on the back front! See what I did there haha. The last two "nights" I have actually been able to sleep comfortably, without every position feeling uncomfortable on my neck, hips or back. I believe that the increased exercise volume, particularly the one handed kettlebell snatches, and club swinging movements, despite leaving me a bit more wiped than usual, are responsible for the noticeable dissipation of my back woes. Another reason I wanted to get this going when I did is because I am moving next week, and won't be hiring a moving company. As far as I know it is just going to be me and Chris moving all my stuff, so the back needs to be good to go for that, and I feel like I am on pace to not only be as strong and well conditioned as ever for it (with the exception of my squat and deadlift strength since I don't max those out any more), but my back has for the last two days felt better than it has in a year.

And once I move, I will be a two minute bike ride from the shop instead of 17ish, so I suspect that will see me over there much more frequently (and probably at all hours!)

Okay, thanks for bearing with me.

And strangely the Kagitsume did look different once I got it here. I could still see the discolouration. So it must have manifested in the ride home in the bag. Oh well it’s taken care of now.

I have a theory but it’s too much to type out. I’ll try to remember when I get home.

How about a proper wip series. This is not my design. Not in a million years would I come up with this because it’s not my style. But it’s what the man wants and I aim to make him what he wants. Waterjet won’t do jimping, so he requested hand cut jimping. Since I get it hardened it has to be one groove at a time with the dremel. Let’s see how I do.
