i have a "go-bag" i leave in my trunk. it consists of 75 feet of rope, heavy duty mag-lite, surgical/suture kit, Kershaw Outcast D2, Buck #119, couple bottles of water, some granola bars, extra clothes, rain gear, decent hiking shoes, glow sticks, emergency blankets, water proof matches, magnesium flint rod, small bundle of cotton cordage, and a whet stone.

so i'd like to know...

WHATS IN YOUR GO BAG???

just thought i'd toss this up here.. if its in the wrong spot kindly place it in the right place =)

if anyone can suggest some improvements to my gobag that'd be helpful too..

cheers.

How about Power Bars instead of granola? Granola is for hippies, and Power Bars have protein in them.

If you have room in your car, a fire extinguisher and an axe or hatchet might also be good choices.

i do have a hatchet in my car but its not part of my go bag. LOL

i also have a ti-lite IV in my car as well but its sitting inside the glove box.

and call me old fashioned but i prefer granola bars over power bars. dunno which one lasts longer though.. in terms of expiry date and what not. and rather then protein i think i'd be looking for carbs for energy in most situations. protein can be suplemented from fish, or other small game i can trap/snare.
but yeah i guess i'll toss a few power bars in there. i got enuf room anyways.

I have 2 advanced BOBs and a motorcycle BOB. One of my advanced is for the trunk the other is kept in the basement. I also have enough water for 1 gallon consumption per person per day for 3 months as well as nonpotable water for use doing everything else. I have plenty of food, either mountain house or MREs. I think I'm going to stash some rice, barley, beans and TVP in mylar bags in 5 gallon buckets soon too.

looks like if Y2K ever really happened you guys woulda been at the top of the list.

I don't know what the big deal is.

You put that thing together and then it just sits there in a large backpack for the next couple of decades. The only thing I need to do to keep my BOB in serviceable condition is cycle the food out occasionally (once a year or so) and replace the flashlights' and watch's batteries and the BICs once in a while.

If you make a well-thought-out list before you have a go at compiling a BOB, you'll save a lot of time and money (for items that you later deem not really necessary). Also, a lot of military surplus stuff is ridiculously inexpensive and, to me, good enough for this purpose. I don't plan to climb Mt. Everest with that gear, after all.

I know that this is tongue-in-cheek, but I find that most people just stuff lots of their favorite items in it without regard to whether they would actually need them all in an emergency.
I read a post on Candlepowerforums once where someone had built a fairly small(!) BOB and included about half a dozen lights, some of them really large and heavy. Likewise, I wouldn't put it beyond some people here to include like three large fixed blades, a nice selection of folders and an axe or two while forgetting to add a water container.

I know that the list above makes it seem like it's a really large kit, but as I said, it all fits into a (German army) backpack and I could comfortably carry it for hours. Carriability is a factor most people overlook IMO.

It looks like an excellant BoB to me and in all seriousness one or two knives is all one needs. I'm lucky to be in an area that has lots of springs and wild foods and other resoursces to draw from and rely on my wits to get through any nasty situation. If I lived in a big city a BOB would make VERY good sense

Thanks, mewolf. I live in a suburb of a not-too-big city and the "wilderness" (or what passes for it in largely urbanized Germany) is pretty close to me too. Surprisingly clean water etc.
