What's one fixed knife and one folder that every enthusiast should own least once???

I think a mini Griptilian, and a Mora....both are fairly affordable, both are good knives.

I think it's more about learning and knowing what you want, and being willing to put the time and effort (and sometimes money) into acquiring that specific thing. Not merely the dollar figure assigned.

Couldn't have said it any better.

And like I said, it's very subjective. Answers to this will vary based on how much one has spent on a knife as I explained in one of my earlier posts.

Swamp Rat, RMD. About the same price as esee 6 but a way better knife, IMO.

The only problem is owning Only one :-)

Fixed: Busse, Dozier.
Folder: Emerson CQC7, Spyderco Para Military and a Case Sodbuster.

Fixed blade: Mora
Folder: Opinel
Multitool: SAK

And of course more important than any of these are your kitchen knives. Food is the #1 thing that needs cutting for most people I know. All hail the paring knife.

ZT0560 for a folder and a Ratmandu for a fixed blade.

But I think everyone should carry and use a SAK or stockman once in a while just so they can see how little you actually need a fancy lock.

At least one stag or jigged bone handled traditional folder (I prefer the stockman pattern). Get in touch with pocketknife roots (plus, infinitely more useful day to day than a big tactical).
What he said! 50+ yrs of carrying a knife every day has brought me full circle from the early cheap shell handle Imperial/Colonial easy open jack knives of my youth to the Rambo/saw back survival "sword" phase through the current tactical hole/wave/a.o./thumb stud/one hand opening/mall ninja offerings to my current SAK/traditional stockman/trapper EDC's. Get in touch with your roots. It's a good thing.--KV

For the folder - I'd say a Spyderco Delica. I've owned several over the past 25 years and they deserve their reputation for performance at an affordable cost point. They are iconic.

For the fixed blade - rather than pick a model, I'll say that every enthusiast should buy a blade blank or a blade with removable scales - and make a set of scales for yourself. Everyone should do this at least once - besides being great fun, it gives you a semi-custom knife that you can call your own. There are hundreds of great blades out there that you can choose from - Spyderco Mules, ESEE blades, hand-made damascus, stick tang Scandis... the list goes on and on...

Or you could buy an MTech and rehandle it. They do a 4" hunting blade with a leather wrap handle that you can get for $10 on Amazon, or $25 will get you a Trailmaster clone that's probably better than the original but still has the TM's idiotic handle design - a piece of rubber held on by nothing but the lanyard tube.

I'll go with a Benchmade Griptilian and for fixed an ESEE knife for medium end prices.. High end, folder Sebenza, fixed Busse. For a slip joint something by Case with a yellow handle.

To me it's like someone saying they're a car enthusiast, but all they have is a bone stock Camry and they think that's as good as it gets. It's not about the money, it's about the commitment.

+1

This is good, I'm feeling a little bromance going on here. Glad someone else is on the same page I am.

Is this really true at US prices? How do ESEE manage to sell any knives? There's nothing wrong with ESEE, but... Bussekin rep + superb looking knife.

Yes. Well... The ratmandu cg is 154 after shipping and depending where you get the esee its about the same. Customs like my first picture cost more of course but even the regular rmd has way better who'd IMO, I traded a few esee out including a 6 but will always own a few rmds. The esee comes with a sheath, and swamp rats do not but I buy a knife for the knife...and a sheath for a sheath.

ETA: for the price id go with Becker over esee...same steel, both great companies...but for the price of esee id always go swamp rat.

I'm going to keep my picks simple and affordable for just about anyone here.
Spyderco Delica.

Esee/RC Rat 3.

My must have in the future as far as the one folder I must own is Hinderer XM-18 it is hard for me to say on a fixed blade because there is so many good ones out there.

EVERYONE should have at least one SAK, either a Victorinox or a Wenger (get 'em soon though!). For a fixed blade, a Mora. I have Sebenzas and Case Bose annual collaborations, and custom bushcraft knives. ALL knife projects could be done with a SAK, Mora, axe and small saw.
