That was what I thought the first time I came across pictures. All these years they had never really caught my interest for a number of reasons off the top of my head:
- mostly small folders;
- weird looking blades;
- wimpy plastic designs;
- Spyder Hole? where'd all the thumbstuds go?;
- some incredibly cheap ones = probably crappy;
- etc etc
I never gave it a second look and went for 'tougher or prettier' things.
THEN. few months ago a friend showed me a Caly3 in person.
Jaw drop!
I couldn't believe what I had in my hands. It was tiny, but it was top notch. I'd never experienced such a crisp and assured feeling from a lock back. I don't know how to describe the buzz I got from the confident "klack". Choking up on the blade never felt more natural. I just wanted to slice something! Spyderholes finally made sense. Heck, the Universe made sense. With a weird feeling of nirvana surrounding me, I handed the knife back.
I couldn't really sleep that night and I bought it off my friend a few days later, only because I was broke I didn't pick it up straightaway. I spent the next few days pouring over the Spyderco website and making a list like I was Santa Claus with an addiction.
Last month, after channeling and pooling some of my vice money, all at once:
Both 95 and 80 Manix, Para-military, Endura FRN, Tasman Salt, CaraCara G10.
I had a longer list but my budget disappeared. It's just sadistic to force someone to choose one Spydie over the next. But I couldn't have been more satisfied.
Even the cheaper CaraCara is of surprisingly good quality. I'd raid the factory here if only I knew where it is.
Spydercos grow on you and they grow on you fast. Now that I am high priest, I've learnt to use all my senses before forming any first impressions
. Am so looking forward to my next hit.
