What's so great about Spydercos?

That was what I thought the first time I came across pictures. All these years they had never really caught my interest for a number of reasons off the top of my head:

- mostly small folders;
- weird looking blades;
- wimpy plastic designs;
- Spyder Hole? where'd all the thumbstuds go?;
- some incredibly cheap ones = probably crappy;
- etc etc

I never gave it a second look and went for 'tougher or prettier' things.

THEN. few months ago a friend showed me a Caly3 in person.

Jaw drop!

I couldn't believe what I had in my hands. It was tiny, but it was top notch. I'd never experienced such a crisp and assured feeling from a lock back. I don't know how to describe the buzz I got from the confident "klack". Choking up on the blade never felt more natural. I just wanted to slice something! Spyderholes finally made sense. Heck, the Universe made sense. With a weird feeling of nirvana surrounding me, I handed the knife back.

I couldn't really sleep that night and I bought it off my friend a few days later, only because I was broke I didn't pick it up straightaway. I spent the next few days pouring over the Spyderco website and making a list like I was Santa Claus with an addiction.

Last month, after channeling and pooling some of my vice money, all at once:

Both 95 and 80 Manix, Para-military, Endura FRN, Tasman Salt, CaraCara G10.

I had a longer list but my budget disappeared. It's just sadistic to force someone to choose one Spydie over the next. But I couldn't have been more satisfied.

Even the cheaper CaraCara is of surprisingly good quality. I'd raid the factory here if only I knew where it is.

Spydercos grow on you and they grow on you fast. Now that I am high priest, I've learnt to use all my senses before forming any first impressions :D. Am so looking forward to my next hit.

Congratulations, you've been bit by the bug. You're in good company here.

Now, post some pics of your new purchases!

the d'allara, native, and delica are also really awesome knives. endura wave is also pretty damn decent.

the full size military with a fully serrated edge is a wicked weapon.

good. :thumbup:

when i look at Benchmades,...i don't really like them; they're good, but i don't really get the urge to buy one.

but what i want to know is, when is the Stretch 2 coming out?
i found that some places were doing pre-orders, with availability in July, but now it is July and i haven't heard anything more.

i think Spyderco should do some big knives, like equivalent to the Benchmade Rukus and a top-end one like the ZT.
edit: i suppose they do, just not the same kind of "tactical" style.

Congratulations on your new knives. You made good choices. Save money as much as you can, Spyderco is making more knives and it wouldn't too bad to catch a few old ones. Do not forget about Spyderco kitchen knives, they are way better than anything you can find in a mall.
It is an addiction, no way out. :D

Got These 2 Byrds, raven and crow for $38 at the outlet. Talk about kid in a candy store. I went in to look for a new EDC and got these because the price was so good.

Hi I don't think I can post pictures, but when I do finally take them, I'll get someone to post them for me!

I'll get someone to post them for me! uhm that's probably not allowed either. you all prob know they're good stuff anyway.

I Agree.

Benchmade's are ok, one of them that has caught my eye recently is the SKirmish.

Funny you should mention stretch 2, they kind of look like a Benchmade Griptillian I have.

ah, sweet.

I do spend some time in China for work, does anyone know where the Spyderco factory is? Is it too much to ask that there be an outlet too!?:(

Well "Z13ist" it won't be too long before you diseminate between Golden Colorado Spyders, Seki City Spyder and that minute handful from a few other obscure places. I started collecting knives seriously back in 1994 and I got my first Spyder in 1995 which was an old school, GIN-1 Mariner. I traded that knife to Slatts here on the Forum and now I dearly miss it :o

But you will soon find out that all of misconceptions you had in the past about Spyderco will quickly fall by the way side. When I got into the elite models with Micarta and G-10 handles i.e. The JD Smith, the Dyad, The C-46 Bob Lum, The Massad Ayoob and a few others I quickly lost my appetite for almost any other production knife out there. There are still a few BMs that are still close to my heart but for the most part I only pay close attention to the blades with the Spyder logo on them.

When you will realize that you really have a serious addiction is when you get to the point to where not only will you have to have every model but you will also have to have every variation of that model. Trust me you seem like you've fallen into the same groove that I have been ensnared in for the last 12 years. Welcome home my friend :D :cool:

Hi z13ist,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum and thanx for the kind words.

No factory outlet in China at this time. sorry.

Most folks rarely notice Spyderco when they first begin an interest in knives. The features we offer take a while to adjust to and appreciate.

JD Spydo I think you are absolutely right. If money was no object... ...

In retrospect, I realise with my first purchases mentioned in this thread, I was sampling pieces from some of the different "categories", i.e. from Golden, the beefiest, tactical, affordable edc, Japan H1, Caly3, obscure Byrd...

On top of that today, browsing the forums, I've come across so many older models that are no longer on the Spyderco website... Where can I find out more? Some collector's site maybe?

Anyway I think I am going to enjoy adding them one by one :)

The Boss shows up here personally!?:eek:

Mr Glesser, you are spot on abt that "most folks rarely noticing..." You must be doing that on purpose, and we're all just part of the plan... HAHA:D

Even more unusual is that he listens to us!

Many of the knives he makes simply have to be held and used to understand. If you only shop with your eyes, you will overlook these great knives for a long time.

As for learning about some of the older models, try these sites:

http://www.ted.tweakdsl.nl/spyderco/spyderco.html

http://paulberetta.com/main_frame.htm

http://knife-collecting.com/

There is a lot of good information there.

Welcome to the fold! :D

Not only he does (and has enough patience to listen and reply), but he also indulges us with what we ask for (err... knives, I mean) ;)

Welcome to the wonderful world of Spyderco :thumbup:

I hope he is listening. Offer the Centofante 3 with G10 scales!!!:D :D

I too love spydercos. Its been the only company I've never had any problems. Everything has come sharp, and rock solid. Worst thing I ever did was buy a BM 806 instead of the manix. I didn't even know what it was still AFTER I came back and looked it up. I've been starving for one ever since. That and a military. And E4. and a waved e4. and a mini manix. And it ever stops.

Lesson. If you're unsure but it says spyderco. Just buy it.
