What's so special about the Busses?

You agree with the point but then you slide in an underhanded slight by noting your knives are "not mithral metal" but adequate to the task.

The Busse users I know don't think there's anything "mithralic" or magical about the knives. For most, they're just a good combination of a lot of factors and worth the money when you get right down to it.

Read more about what the sacred order of Busse put into these these threads, forums and you'll see way too much talk of Infi and the magical (mithral) properties of it. Its a sharpened piece of metal, no more or less; if you stab it into something it should pierce then cut. I will always maintain that they are not worth the money, neither is Fehrman or Strider.

They are not worth the money as a users tool, but are as a collectors piece as there will always be those dedicated to them like the Harley Davidson, the Weatherby magnums and countless other things that carry a mystique for the elitists that can afford to use them.

Find me a thread where someone mentions the magical qualities of a Busse. Honestly, I don't think you will. And by your logic, if it's just "a sharpened piece of metal," why in the world would you pay over $100 for a Ranger knife when a $6 Tramontina could probably do what you want with just a little more sharpening from time to time?

It's all a matter of degrees and price points. The Busse price point happens not to be your price point, and so for some reason, you see fit to make charges of magical imaginings, "mystique," and "elitists." I venture, however, that anybody who comes into the Busse forums with honest questions (instead of an axe to grind) will get the red carpet rolled out and some honest assessment of the knives. Not magical claims.

It has little to do with who can afford what. There are some Busse owners who regularly post in the Busse forum and who own only one or two pieces of INFI. They are treated with the same respect as the HOG who owns enough Busse steel to sink the Titanic.

FWIW the steel is an excellent steel with a good heat treat. If it weren't the company would go out of business servicing its own warranty. Is it the pinnacle of performance in every category? No way. But it does very well in a wide range of categories, and that's a big part of what gives the Busse line a devoted following.

There is another thing, there is a reason busse is still in buisness. THEY MAKE AWSOME KNIVES! no two way's around it, the materials, the QC and the warrenty are what make them so saught after. sure they can be $400 a pop, but so what, you'll have that knife the rest of your life. Ok, some others you may have for the rest of you life, but a lifetime warrenty, materials and QC wont.

To each his own, sure a $100 can do the same, I prove that just as many do every day, but its not only the knife your buying its the name and that grandure of owning a busse.

I'll add something else worth mentioning. I've seen some over-the-top claims about Busse knives on Bladeforums in my 7+ years here. What I've come to realize is that the people who automatically proclaim Busse knives as THE GREATEST KNIVES IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE IN EVERY SINGLE WAY are people who've never even held one, let alone used one. Maybe The Chef, in his year or so of posting here, has run into one or more of these types. But I see, with an Advanced Search, that he's never actually posted in the Busse forum.

I write from an insider perspective of someone who posts regularly over there. And I'm here to tell you that the folks who enjoy these knives are the furthest thing from elitists you'll find. It's come one, come all. While the Busse crowd doesn't tolerate stereotypical attacks very well, they'll listen with a thoughtful ear to critiques regarding design and steel. And while they're pretty adamant about their preference for Busse knives, they don't knock anybody or look down their noses regarding other choices. It's just not the way it works over in that forum.

Think about a native of a third-world country who uses a $3 machete all the time. He'd think The Chef is off his rocker for spending $100+ on a Ranger. :p

(And he'd think me an absolute stark raving lunatic for spending $400 on a Busse.)

But he'd use one if you gave it to him. Friends of mine have done trips to the far reaches of Earth and the native peoples couldn't wait to get their hands on modern gear and equipment. they are smart and know quality when they use it no matter what the product.

They came home light in the gear dept.

I think this forum needs better smileys.

It is sometimes hard to convey sarcasm. Sometimes you need a :poke: or a :slap:

But all we got is.:eek::foot::jerkit::barf::D:thumbup::cool::rolleyes:

This forum can get pretty out of hand with bashing each other. I can't understand it.

tknife I hope you are wrong. If you're right then this forum is pretty worthless.

BladeForums.com > Tactics & Training> Wilderness & Survival Skills

'Course, we could always rename the Forum the "Very Best Knife Choice Forum" :D

Hey Guyon,

Since I see you're still here, what's your opinion of an Active Duty as a general purpose bushcraft knife?
