What's so special about the Busses?

I have used a few, took them on camping trips. Wasn’t impressed (Unlike the hype would suggest). Like I said, the novelty of a thick piece of steel wears off soon enough to feel it.

So why didn't you try a thinner Busse? And more importantly, why spread the stereotype that all Busses are "thick" when, in fact, so many of the smaller knives are quite thin?

None of these knives are extremely thick. Almost all are well-suited to bushcraft or EDC in that regard. 6 of the knives below come in at .170" or thinner. The rightmost knife, which many contend is Busse's best bushcraft blade, is .153" thick.

What irritates me is this:

- 1st off, Busse websites suck and are literally useless.

Ture

- Busse guys generally don't like to trade out of the family (my busse for your busse crap).

False

- They do not come with sheaths and if someone buys an after market sheath then the price rises significantly

True

- even the used blades are just as expensive as if they came from the factory.

False (they are most often more expensive)

Not pickin' on ya IH8U...just my opinions.

And if your gonna get a Busse, get a Satin Jack TAC. This is the only Busse I own and I will NEVER NEVER NEVER part with it. Never.

Depends on what you're looking for. If it's porn you want, try Google. :D

I've sold quite a few Busses to first-time owners lately. As for trades, well yeah, that's a different story. Often it's because someone is offering a $50 Cold Steel for a $200 Busse because "Cold Steels are just as good."

- They do not come with sheaths and if someone buys an after market sheath then the price rises significantly

They used to come with sheaths. I think Busse got tired of people complaining that they wanted different sheaths, so the company simply started recommending a variety of kydex benders and leather stitchers.

- the naming structure is just plain weird (my SSNFO for your OBGYN)

No more weird than the HI forum or even here. NWA? WSK?

- even the used blades are just as expensive as if they came from the factory

This actually is a nice feature. If you buy a knife, use it, and don't like it, you'll get your money out of it. Try that with a Spyderco or Benchmade.

I just don't get it. Even though I would like one, I do not see it happening any time soon.

If so many things irritate you about Busses, I do wonder why you still "would like one." Still, I encourage you to try a smaller, thin blade from Busse or a big chopper if that sort of thing floats your boat. Busse excels at making both. The knives are excellent hard-use blades that hold an edge well. The warranty is as good as any out there.

Guyon,

What is the right most knife in the pic (very nice collection btw).

Thanks,

sp

Barrabas, that knife is called an Anorexic (because it's thin) Badger Attack. It's the Limited Edition version (non-coated, satin finish), so you'll see it referred to as the ABA LE. It was part of a run of Busse Badgers called the BA-III's (third generation Badgers).

Busse has put out a "Badger" line four times now. There were the original straight-handled Badgers (SHBA's). Then came the Badgers with the "ergo" handles (BA-E's). Then came the third-generation Badgers (BA-III's). And just recently, Busse sold the Badger Attack Tacticals (BATAC's). Have a look here under "Badger Attack": http://www.bussecollector.com/gpage.html5.html

Hey Guyon,

The 2 next to the 3 Game Wardens are Active Duty's? Also, I guess satin finish are more expensive than coated?

Thanks,

Doc

Correct on the Active Duty identification. Yes, satin is more expensive since the satin hand finishing takes more man hours. The coated Busses are rougher underneath, which actually helps the coating hold on more effectively. Lots of folks strip and hand-finish the coated versions quite nicely though.

Not true. Last week we had a thread about the Nessmuk as a bushcraft knife, and everyone agreed that its not ideal for that list of tasks compared to other styles.

 okee dokee then. So, whats the attraction? The phenomenon I am speaking of is its popularity in the past couple of years has gone through the roof and I cant for the life of me see why? :o

It really comes down to what people like, if somebody likes Busse, then thats what they like, I have owned a few Busse's, Leatherman bought my old school steel heart (hope its still working for ya bud). And really enjoyed using them, my taste changed, and I bought something else.

P.S The 1911 will always be king LMAO

Hey bro! Long time no write! :D I still have that one, and yep its been beaten quite a bit since. Its the best chopper I have bar none.

I also still have that older Fehrman First Strike that I got in the same time span. And it still has that godawful thick edge, lol! I just keep polishing it and it cuts like a razor.

I would say this is pretty accurate assessment except used blades are more expensive than the new ones from the store!

They are also often sold as 'mint' which makes me think they just bought them to resell them later at a higher price.

I would really like to see more products available, particularly SR/SY stuff. IMO this would create a lot more Busse customers and stop the 'buying just for the sake of reselling' activity.

To start, I would like to say that I want a decent Busse family blade most likely a decent sized Swamp rat, but what I have to trade won't seem to do it.

guys normally trade busses for other busses. some trade for other stuff, but not that often.

its not a "trade only within the family" thing, its just that we want more or other busses. just because what you have to trade equals my busse dollar for dollar, that doesnt mean i want what you have.

but i have indeed traded busses for other stuff. lightfoot, strider, but mostly just for other busses.

Perhaps this has already been asked and answered but I missed it during the foodfights:

What is the significance of the oinks, grunts and other porcine lingo, piggy names, and all of the images of pigs? What is up with that and what does it have to do with knives?

Just curious.

Codger

Have you never seen the photo's from the Busse "crew"
get together's.
Big units some of these fella's.
Not the sort you would welcome into an all you can eat Gannza

Its just a cool rustic woodland design steeped in history. Its a good skinner. But its point isn't really pointy enough for drilling, so a scandi is really a bit better for strict bushcraft. Its good in the kitchen and a nice light camp knife.

But the be all and end all, it is not.

I agree. There are some Nessmuk fanatics who are paying as much for custom-made, carbon-steel Nessmuks as for any small Busse. I've always supposed that it had something to do with history and/or "authenticity," but the reality is that most mountain men used whatever they could get their hands on. I doubt Jedediah Smith gave any thought to ordering a custom Nessmuk. :D

Beauty (and value) is in the Eye of the beholder.
I think Van Gough's paintings are crap and although Busse's are quality, they are a quality that I can neither afford or justify for MYSELF.
I love the Busse "crew" you should post more pictures of your get togethers, I always enjoy looking at who is who from Busse combat.

Those are cool. I'm dying to get a game warden. I just don't wanna pay the price....:o

Well, I look at it like this. Busses are like semi-custom blades. Of any one knife, there aren't *that* many more like it out there in the world. And each Busse is hand-finished after any CNC machining, so there's a bit of the custom touch in it.

I'm also paying for the warranty, which is unmatched. I've seen Jerry Busse replace knives he probably shoudn't have. I don't use every single Busse I own, but of the many that do get beaten, I don't worry about beating them.
