Not a Beckerhead, but I do own one.
When I saw this thread, and thought of the rough and ready nature of the knives,
what comes to mind is "waddya got"?

Mead is actually pretty simple, you really only need honey, water, yeast, and time. You do need some equipment (ie, a carboy, an airlock, etc) but it's not too much to get started. Honey is by far the biggest expense.

Blackberry is fabulous in meads, I particularly like Blackberry Cyser: http://www.bardicbrews.net/2011/11/blackberry-cyser/
Cyser is mead made with apple cider and honey rather than water and honey (like half hard cider, half mead). As soon as I have another carboy free I'll be putting down this year's Blackberry Cyser, with fresh pressed cider from the orchard around the corner, and blackberries I picked from my yard all summer.

Mead is honey wine. Good commercial meads can be tricky to find but they are definitely out there. Where are you located? I might know of a good meadery near you. Tons are popping up, it's almost like the microbrew phenomenon with beers 20 years ago, where a brewpup popped up on every corner it seemed.

If you are interested in my thoughts about what makes mead so cool, you can read What Is So Special About Mead?

Jwl, seems like theres alot to that mead. special equipment, work and time. Doubt id ever do that myself. really i never heard of mead. sounds interesting! A blackberry mead would probably be delightful.

from what i gather its honey wine? i dont drink wine often but i enjoy it with a meal here and there. ill have to see if i can find somewhere that sells it by the glass to test it.

When i was about 14 i had a girlfriend whos father made homemade wine. she stayed my girlfriend long overdue just because of that, lmao.

Im in philadelphia. i have found online a place that delivers inside PA only, but cant find an actual local place.

They have blackberry mead and its only 15 a bottle shipped so ill probably give it a go.

Yeah, give it a try. Commercial meads are kinda dicey, there are some that are really good, and others.... not so much. All of the best meads I've had are homebrews, made by me and my tribe, there are things you can do with homebrew that do not scale up to commercial production.

The one thing good commercial meaderies do well is consistency. And again, many of them (such as B. Nektar in Michigan, Brothers Drake in Columbus, OH, Moonlight Meadery in NH, Maine Mead Works up in my neck of the woods, among many others) really have commercial production dialed in and are making great products.

I'm pretty sure that Moonlight Meadery just signed a national distribution deal, so you might be able to find their products near you....

For beer I like New belgium 1554 and Yeungling Black & Tan. As for hard stuff, when I drink it, I like Glenlivet or Wild Turkey...depending on the mood.

Usually a good 15 year Port and a couple Tabak Especial cigars from Drew Estates. If I feel like roughing it, then 40 Creek whiskey and a Vice cigar from Alec Bradley.
For beer, I must agree with Mistwalker, I enjoy a good couple pints of Yeungling Black & Tan. Yes it one of the few beers I pick when I cross border shop!

I like my Jack, I recently tried Makers Mark for the first time as well and I enjoyed it very much, I hoping to try some Knobb Creek next

Beer: Rolling rock, Green light or BL Platinum.

Liquor: Sailor Jerry's rum, Bombay Sapphire Gin, or Grey Goose Vodka.

To be fair though, I don't drink much. Maybe a six pack a month. B. Nektar in Michigan eh? I'll have to see if anyone local carries it. Mead is yummy.

Posted these in chat but thought they belonged here too:

If any of you like pumpkin beer and live near a Trader Joes look for this stuff, they only charge $6 for a 6 pack and it's awesome stuff.

I honestly might have 6 beers in a whole year, but I always pick something local and have been pleased. New Glarus, Leinenkugel's, Sprecher, Ale Assylum, Lazy Monk, Horny Goat...I've found stuff I like from all of them. Of course, I won't turn down a Sam Adams.

I run on water and coffee mostly, though.

Guinness for strength!

And a frosty Moosehead Lager is a perfect fit in a tweener sheath pocket... :p

But the best beer in the world is free beer. Second best is cold beer. The rest is entirely subjective... :D

It depends on the season for me. In the summer i like to have cold Bombay Sapphire. As it cools down, i enjoy a darker drink like Jim, Jack or Wild Turkey. Beer wise - i don't drink it that often. right now i only have some Bud Light Platinum in the fridge. In my younger days a few buddies of mine and myself did get our names put on the wall in our local bar for drinking 100 pints of Guinness.
