Looking for a fixed blade huntimg knife for deer work.Trying to keep it under $100.00. What has been the best or worst steel you have used and most favorite handle material.

There are many choices available.

One I'd definitely look at would be a Bark River with a canvas Micarta handle.

Might have to go a bit over a hundred, might not...but worth every penny.

I hear the Spyderco Moran Featherweights are good. I've never had one myself but it seems like a good knife to use for skinning and such. VG-10 is my favorite steel and it gets super sharp easily and will resist corrosion well.

I have had similarly favorable experiences with VG-10. It is easily my favorite steel as it will take an excellent edge, is fairly easy to sharpen and I've never experienced any rusting with it. I would look at the BRKT knives as they are phenomenal but if you're looking for VG-10 I'd try Fallkniven.

Yes, the Fallkniven F1 or S1 might suit your needs very, very well.

They are great knives, made of laminated VG-10.

Something from: http://www.shadowknives.com

Eddie makes amazing pieces for very reasonable prices. Some may be a tad over 100 but for 100% handmade in the USA with fit and finish second to very few, they are well worth it!

Bark River fox river
Fallkniven F1
Buck also makes some great knives.

For steel I like A2, but as others have said VG-10 gets high marks.
Micarta is very durable, but can get slippery when wet (like blood wet)
I would look in the for sale are of this forum for a good custom, you can find great deals on a 1 of a kind knife you can be proud to own.

I shy away from anything with a greater blade length than 3.5" for Deer.

The ones I like have been mentioned;

Spyderco Featherweight Moran. Great Steel, Thin and Razor Sharp blade, Kraton Insert (very grippy) in the handle sides for security, nice Sheath. Well under $100

Bark River with Micarta handle. Try to find an A2 Steel model, take care of it and it will last a lifetime. Nearly handmade with a Convex Grind that will amaze you (but you will have to learn to sharpen - or send it in to Bark River for sharpening). Very good Leather Sheath. Depending on Model - you could probably locate a new one for slightly more than $100

Fallkniven has an excellent Rep but I have never owned one.

I would say that an F1 might fit... also a Cold Steel Master hunter... they have pretty much the same blade shape and I guess that they fit your budget as well.

I think well of all the choices offered.Bark River make an excellent knife but they will cost you more, and I disagree about the sheathes:they are really impractical in my view, they ride very high on the belt, just try getting in a car or van whilst wearing one, really painful jab&bruising on the ribs! First class knives&choice though.

Böker arbolitto have pleased me well and check a Marttiini puukko in skinner form 22cms overall just under 9" with an under 4" blade in carbon that's Teflon coated.Sharp is an understatement and the ergonomics of this knife are superb:Rubberized handle, bronze crossguard you cannot slip with this in the wettest or bloodiest conditions.

www.marttiini.fi there must be American sources too.

I would agree! Actually any of the Cabelas AG Buck Knives are worth the money. I have several different models and I love them all. Anyone of these knives are well worth it, and the S30V is awesome!

Otherwise look at some of the Ontario RAT knives? Maybe the new RAT knives? The RC-3 looks very nice!

I vote for the Buck Alaskan. I spent some time looking at that knife and it was priced just a bit out of my range, but I'd spend the extra few bucks and go for the wood grips. The Alpha Hunters also look good. Finally, you might want to take a look at the Cold Steel Loredo SK-5 Bowie. It might just bump up a bit over a hundred, but not much.

The Bark River line,Upland model .It has the A-2 steel. Is it a pain to take care of ? As far as keeping sharp and what about the rust factor ? I want to break it out when I need it not sit and polish it on my down time.Or maybe there is another blade type to look at.

A diligent search will net you a Bark River Woodland or Highland Special for no more than $100, if you go with plain jane handle material.

As for the high ride sheaths, it's easy to turn one into a dangler with a carabiner or something.
