Whats the best Khukri if you only own one?

I really do think either the BAS or 15inch AK are the ones that best fit the do-everything criteria. I have many others, and I love them, but these do almost everything well. And keep in mind that the weights and dimensions vary from maker to maker, khuk to khuk--my BAS is heavier than my 15inch AK, and a better chopper.

Thanks

I bought nine or ten HI Khuks over the last couple months.

Based on that, I'd say one would be very well served with either the 16.5" WWII or 15" BAS. But since you will have smaller blades on your person then I'd recommend the 18" Gelbu Special or 18" Sirupati.

Your best bet if you only want to own one HI khukuri is not to buy any at all, because once you buy the first one, it's very difficult to stop:D If you must have only one, though, a 16.5" WWII or BAS will serve you admirably for a variety of tasks.

If I had to choose just one I'd choose my 21" horn handled Gelbu Special. It speaks to me. It speaks volumes. It's singing to me right now. She sounds kind of like Mary Ford or Kathleen Turner. ;)
Second runners would be the Uncle Bill Especial and 18" WW2.
Third place would be the Movie Model, and the M43.

only 1...my Dui-chirra

You know, Sweet, every time I manage to get the image of that beatiful khukuri out of my mind, you post it again...

Did you check it out before I snatched it up?

Heh heh, If I'd had the $, you wouldn't have snatched it up;) Nicest khuk on the table at the convention by far. I'd already grabbed an M43 though...

Although it isn't necessarily my favorite khuk on some days of the week, my 16.5" Chiruwa AK is probably the most useful. This is due to the 16.5" blade, which seems to address a wider range of tasks than the 15" without being as heavy on the belt as an 18". A 16.5" AK with a traditional handle would be super if you could find one. My favorite handle material is horn on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays, wood on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with the sequence alternating every other week.

Ditto, but I seem to have gotten stuck on wood.

Any of them would be the best value of your life if you were in a tent with strange noises outside.

For me the best sleeping pill is a 16.5 WWII within reach of bedside. It comforts me like no other.

Which is best? Blonde, Brunette, Redhead or Raven-tressed beauty?

Redhead.. definately readhead...

That's pretty funny., Uncanny even : I just asked in a new thread this very thing.. where some of you keep your kuks.

I've bought far too many khukuries over the last couple of years, but I haven't bought one for about six months now. Is my HI virus cured? If it is, the cure lays with Uncle Bill. Earlier this year I asked him to choose a khukuri for me. The only requirement was that it weigh no more than 24 ounces. He chose the sweetest 16 1/2 inch WWII that he said he wouldn't mind owning himself. It has wide finger grooves in the grip that fitted my hand perfectly. I then sent it to Terry Sisco to have a quick draw sheath made for it. These are incredibly light sheaths and allow you to leave the two smaller tools at home if you want to. Terry is a genius with leather. Since I bought that khukuri I haven't been tempted to buy another.

So if its only going to be one - give Uncle Bill your requirements and trust his judgement. Of course, if everyone follows this advice Uncle Bill will put himself out of business.

As an aside, I now am searching for the ideal lightweight slicer as a companion to this khukuri when camping. I found the Spyderco Featherweight Moran to be an excellent companion but the best is a magic knife called a "Glide" (do a search and you will find it). So no matter what, I am still spending money because of that damned HI virus.:D

I think I've got my choice narrowed down to these three;

16.5" Chiruwa AK, M43 or a 16.5" WWII. (moderately in order)
Now if I could just fine one second hand for a good price.

There actually is a good chance of doing just that with a combination of the practice of patience and mongoose swift grabbing.

18.5" WWII would be my pick if I only had one. Within reach of the bed are two really well balanced Sirupatis. They help the sawed-off & the old .44 keep those "bumps in the night" at bay. The Sirupatis are not the choppers the WWII or the AK's are, but then they don't talk to me about "chained lightning" like the Sirupatis do when the night gets dark & the shadows get long. The VERY BEST khukuri is the one you have in your hand when you need it; regardless of size, weight & etc.

At my age I would still have a hard time picking just one from the few that I have. For someone that only wants one HI khuk, there are several that would be good choices for an only khuk.

The 16.5" WWII, 18" Sirupati 20" in the daylight when there is no restrictions on seeing where and what you are doing. I have two 12" AK's that are just about the same weight. They will handle a bunch of chores from light chopping to defense. I have a BAS that is just a little light but is very fast in the hand and will still chop pretty well. For only one khuk I would think that over 18" khuks would be just a bit impractical. To me the 20" and above start to get just a bit blade heavy to be all round khuks. Just the way they feel to me.
What ever you pick I doubt that you will bve disappointed.:)

I'd have to say my 16.5 Chiruwa AK. It keeps the other AK, the one with the 75 round drum, company by the bedside. It may not be my only AK, but it's my only khuk.
