When I went to Nam in 1970, I had a Gerber 'Magnum Hunter,' an aluminum handled hunting/skinning knife with about a five inch blade. It was too small for use as a once in a while machete so I wrote Gerber and asked if they would make me the same knife but with a blade twice as long, i.e., ten inches. We went back and forth for a couple of letters. Gerber told me they did not make custom knives, however, since I was an Army guy in Nam, etc., they would see what they could do for a one of a kind 'fighting' and general purpose knife. They asked me to trace my knife hand and send it to them. Couple of weeks later, I got a notice I had a package to pick up at the APO (Army Post Office). There was this cardboard carton with a bill for $90 and change. I paid the bill and accepted the package. Wow! A little bit of a Ghurka style knife with Sambur stag handle and ten inch, razor sharp blade. To make a long story short, this knife has since been appraised for $10,000 plus as a one of a kind! It is one of my very prized possessions and I'll leave it to my kids when I check out. It is THE premium fighting knife of my life and has been used for that function. With its dropped style blade, it goes point out and level when 'stabbed' and the balance makes it feel like the 'business' part of the blade is about three inches back from the tip when slashed. On one unfortunate occasion, I did slash at an opponent and vividly remember all of his four fingers in the air at one time. True story.
