What's the best outdoor knife you don't own?

For what its worth, Grohmann are the sexiest blades in the world as far as I am concerned. However they also have the worst steel I have ever worked with. They get razor sharp very fast and dull just as quick.

Sexy all the same even without real world edge holding. Mine is a loaner now.

Do you have a Stainless or High Carbon blade, I used the passaround to chop through a half a dozen 3"- 3 1/2" Sumacs and it was still sharp enough to prep my dinner that night.

Sometimes the heat treat gets messed up and a few bad ones slip through QC, as do with any production knife mnfgr.

I only had the one knife to try so I can't attest to the QC of their knives but the one I tried did hold it's edge for the week I had it.

Sometimes we forget the old days of a good carbon steel blade that we touched up on a regular basis and was truly razor sharp.

The newer super steels stay sharp longer but a lot more people can't seem sharpen their own blades to their own satisfaction.

Everything in life's a trade off.

Mine is a stainless steel of some sort. Circa 1968 approx. the design hasn't changed a bit. I also have friends that bought them new recently and had the same complaint with the stainlsss models anyway. the carbon steel models would fair better I am sure.

I tried to skin a deer with it about 20 years ago and had to touch it up 3 times in the process, the steel is just too soft in mine anyway.

I saw some Brian Goode knives in Tactical Kinves that I really admired...

(He soooo needs a website)

id really like to have a busse e-handled steel heart . every time i see that knife i wish i had one . ive got a ranger rd7 that is made exactly like the old straight handled busse knives and i really like it so im pretty sure id fall imediatly in love with one of busse's newer e- handled knives . the swamp rat ratwieler seems like an awesome knife as well.

I have a Grohmann boat knife and the shealth is art. The knife is wonderful as well. I bought it when I was 18 (21 years ago) It was in retirement for 12 years or so but its every bit the knife it was.. I bought it to replace a Kabar I lost during a canoe trip. I was young so was my friend, we found out that vodka and canoeing don't mix until after the canoe is ashore. It looked more civil than the kabar which was bought when I was 16 more for show.

My next outdoor knife.. Tough I might get one of the newer Grohmann, or perhaps a new sheath for my boat knife I think you can buy the sheath with a pocket for a marlin spike but I'll fill it with a fire steel.

The Grohmann factory is only 50-60 km away but I'm on an Island and its on the mainland. Years later I went there after travelly through Cape Breton on my honeymoon and we bought a nice chef knife which I still love to this day.

I'd love to pick up a Chiruwa Ang Khola from Himalayan Imports. They say if you can break it, they'll send you two for free. However, I don't have a lot of use for a thing like that and $145 seems like a lot of money for something I won't ever get to use.

I mean, I'm pushing it carrying a 5.5" knife in the state parks around here. I can just imagine the conversations and the looks if I can trucking up the path with one of these things hanging off my hip.
