What's the big deal about Para Military?

Hey guys, I haven't handled let alone own a Spyderco as I'm more of a Benchmade guy, but I hear so many good things about the Para Military 2. Don't see what the fuss is about, it's good steel, looks simply made... What's the deal? Can anyone fill me in?

Put simply it's a bad ass knife. There is a reason dealer's can't keep them in stock. I would put the Para 2 up against just about any Benchmade. The ergos, ease of opening and the compression lock make it the perfect EDC.

Good steel (standard S30v), good ergonomics, size is good for carry, good lock, nice clip. Decent price. Just a simple well thought out carry knife.

The 'big deal' for me was it got me interested in Spyderco. Now I have my 'perfect' carry knife. The Military :)

(But the PM2 still sees some pocket time ;) )

I owned about a dozen Benchmades also...then I got a PM2, don't have any benchmades anymore! So much more for your money and a great company to promote!

At a street price of about $100.00, it's probably the best value, USA made folder out there. Unfortunately, I find it too big for EDC.

It's a great edc. I think the Gayle Bradley at about the same price is better but some folks don't like the non stainless or the carbon fiber or the fact that the GB is made in Taiwan but my top 5 edc knife list goes something like this:
1. Spyderco Gayle Bradley
2. Spyderco PM2
.
.
.
3. Delica 4
4. Ritter grip
5. Any number of USA made kershaws

You have to handle them to know what the fuss is about. Spyderco is a premier brand and if you don't own one, or more than one preferably, you're missing out on some truly great knives.

I think you should stick with benchmade:rolleyes: Maybe you could "Preorder" a Griptilian.

This is pretty much my exact story. I don't think its presumptuous to bet that several others share this story.

Don't get me wrong, I still like Benchmade. But man, something about these Spydercos gets under your skin and won't let go. It's almost like after handling several brands, Spydercos have a soul. I know that may sound odd, but it's the in the same way that after handling a bunch of polymer framed pistols. You pick up an old blued smith revolver. They just feel right.

I am a convert to the cult of Spyderco after being very heavily invested in other brands. They just work on so many levels.

With the PM 2 being the king of the roost for me.

Military is a close second.

The pm2 is a knife that makes little sense just reading about it or watching YouTube vids. You have to get one in hand to understand. It's like the first time you taste bacon.

It's also pretty much a risk free purchase, it's not like they are hard to move if it's not for you.

Short answer - for me the PM2 is the only knife I need for most knife purposes. I have recently been carrying Milies a lot more for the extra length, but the PM2 checks all the boxes - high quality cutting tool, great ergos, great size, light weight, strong lock, easy to carry, just feels right. I usually pair it with a fixed blade or beefier folder if I am concerned about really leaning on it, but it has done a lot of hard cutting tasks. By "it" I mean one of several cuz you can't have just one :)

Not much more to say here, the PM2 just has it nailed. Is a very high performance knife with tons of subtle details that make it wonderful as an edc. As someone else said, i too pair it up with a small 3" fixed blade in m390 in those rare cases where i need to do something i wouldn't subject a folder to. But for me the PM2 takes care of 98% of my needs.

Interesting replies, thanks everyone for each. Might have to pick one up. So what's the difference between the Pm 2 and 1, If any? Would you all recommend a PM2 as a first spyderco, or something else? For EDC, I carry a benchmade Contego and 581... I prefer big blades. Recommendations?

I don't know, best bet would be to buy one and find out for yourself.

For your first Spyderco I'd have to say go with the Delica 4. However you won't be disappointed no matter which one you get. I used to hate Spyderco and think they were just ugly and poorly designed. Then, just because of this place, I bought a Delica 4 just to say I have one and still hate it. Well I held it, I used it...I loved it. Now I think Spyderco's are beautiful and the best knives out there for the money.

Edit: just noticed you like big blades, maybe skip the Delica then and get an Endura. Or maybe instead of a PM2 get the Military. Oh well doesn't matter, once you buy one you'll end up owning all of them soon enough :)

You have to handle them to know what the fuss is about.

Let me refine that statement slightly...you have to handle them and use them to know what the fuss is about.

Spyderco knives feel like an extension of your hand, not like a knife held by your hand. Specifically good in this area are the Endura, Delica, Dragonfly, Paramilitary 2, Military, and Caly3.
