What's the big deal about sebenza?

Tom,

about two pounds. No, wait, thats that old Steinweigh joke. Never mind.

You should never have to pay over $250 for a plain Sebenza (Large or Small). If you search the forums enough you can get one for even cheaper (but $200 is the lowest I have heard of). For that money, the Sebbie is a great buy.

Buy one second hand and check it out. Then you will know what everyone is talking about. As far as personality... you can always change the lanyard:)

Tom, the Sebenza is a copy of the BM 750, but they put the clip on the other end, and got cheap, and didn't use as many screws.
The extra $200 is for the anodized thumb stud and spacer;)

Well that explains it.
You get the best production knife in the world for free.
The paint is what costs the dollars!   :D

This is one hot looking blade, I wish I had extra $500 to spend :(

An extra $500 to spend? I'd buy the TNT!

Sebenzas are a great "in between" knife: they help you get over the hump between buying a production knife, and getting a true handmade custom knife. (Yes, CRK is a production knife. Try asking for different blade styles, blade steels or a few holes in the handle and see what you get...)

Jameson,

You must be very young! Why worry about Tom's age? Check out his web site for more information on who he is. (And what does a knife have to do with a stuffed fish??)

Does the TNT have a lifetime warranty? Tom Mayo how old are you? A friend of mine had a 40#
mount of a striped bass delivered to his door in November. The taxidermist told him "the skin
mount is good for 30 years. Just bring it to me every year and I will condition it. I will replace it with a fiberglass painted replica if the skin deteriorates in any way." He received word this afternoon that the taxidermist whom completed the work just died on him (he was 68). Now will the same thing happen to me if I drop the bomb on a tnt? JC

How old do you think Chris Reeve is? How old is Tom Mayo? You seem to have a problem with math. ...I've always heard about those NY schools.:p

Do you know the difference between the CRK and the MAYO knives warranty? Try "flicking" or "spine whacking" your Sebenza and see how good your "Lifetime Warranty" really is. Let's get a little more information before we rule Mayo's Warranty out based on his age...

I don't think this guy likes me. And my reference to a stuffed fish was merely to say that the warranty is only as good as the man who honors it. This applies to custom knives bought from an individual maker as well as taxidermists who offer warranties. Whether it is your "word" or a written legal contract when you die its left behind. And who is going to go to a dead mans family and ask for his $400 back? I have more respect than to do that.

JC

JC,

Relax! I don't dislike you: Basicly all fisherman are good people. I once read about some really cool fishermen in a very old book...

My point was just that the MAYO warranty is not as "exclusive" as the CRK warranty. I have never heard of Mayo charging for repairs. Period.

One is a Custom Knife warranty and the other is a warranty of a very nice Production Knife...

Are Seb's worth these prices--without a freakin' doubt. And stop sour-graping the Seb. If you have only "handled" one, then fooey on you. Pick one up used, and if you really don't like it, turn around and sell it within a week or two for EXACTLY what you paid for it.

Professor.

Thanks for saving me the typing Professor... my thoughts exactly.

I was in Las Vegas for the last few days taking in the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and while there visited Blanchards Cutlery. I had a chance to check out a few few Sebenzas while I was in the shop and was thoroughly impressed. The fit and finish was excellent on all, and they were as sharp as any production knife I have tried. This is a real top notch knife. It just felt like they belonged in my hand. Highly recommended.

Both Tom Mayo and the Reeve's are as good as their word.

Agreed! Fine gentalman: Both!!

But, CRK's word is against flicking or spine whacking. I believe these actions "void" the warranty. That's what I meant about "exclusive"... but I may be wrong...

I don't hammer things with the back of my blade, or try to impress others with how fast I can snap my knife open. Both actions only add wear and tear and are, IMO, abuse of the knife. If you have to do a hard, fast opening in an emergency situation, it's not going to have any ill effects on your knife. But, prolonged, repeated snap openings will eventually cause damage. If a maker wishes to cover this in his/her warranty, more power to them. It's their time and money. To me, this isn't any great addition to the warranty.

The "custom/handmade" vs "production" debate can rage on forever. Bottom line is quality. Either it's there, or it isn't. IMHO, the Sebenza is the finest "production" folder made.
