What's the big deal about sebenza?

The object of endlessly repeated discussion on every knife forum in the universe...

I wonder if asbestos suits will ever be offered as an accessory by CRK? Maybe with the CRK logo embroidered on and a special pocket designed specifically for the Sebenza.

It all comes down to personal preference.

A Sebenza is just like each knife that you all own. . .you saw it, it tickled your fancy and you purchased it.

The only thing mystical. . .about your Sebenza or other name brand knife (including customs) ? It rocked your world !

Doesn't matter what kind of knife you own ~ still makes you a knife knut ! :D

That's the important thing ! ;)

I can't believe I read this thread! After reading many of the "I don't get it" Sebenza posts, I think the big deal is: Alot of folks can't believe alot of other folks are paying that much for a production knife! I own one Sebenza, a small regular with unique graphic. It makes a great EDC, is heavy duty and elegant all in one. I don't see how anyone could find much fault with these solid and functional tools. Is it crazy to spend 3 or 4 hundred bucks on a knife...sure if you don't have that much to spend. I think it's just as dumb for someone who is not broke to go out and buy a cheapo knife to carry when they could afford something of better quality.

I cant believe how many of my friends wear Rolexs!!
I can only afford a cheap imitation Omega!!! :( :( :(

Tom, I didn't realize Omega's were cheap knock off's! I just moved up from a Seiko to Omega Seamaster Automatic 10 days ago and was feeling like a celebrity until your above post!!!;) :p :D At least I'm in good company with other poor Omega owners.....

Omegas are awesome watches, i don't think tom is saying they aren't...he was saying that he has a fake omega like the kind you get on the streets of New York.

Not that i think anyone is going to read this far into the thread, i didnt, but i just cant be silent on this issue.

I was new to high end knives, with no preconceived notions, i had seen some MT's, MOD, Case, and a bunch of relatively lower end stuff, the MTs impressed me with their fit, finish and feel, the MODs did as well, i liked their obvious precision and attention to detail. It was then i considered dropping serious $ on a knife, i was about to make a commitment, that may in the end cause me to BE committed, thats another story.

I am a perfectionist, the likes of which is rarely seen, outside state mental hospitals anyway, my perfectionism, and quest for extreme precision and flawless mechanisms borders on pathological, did i say borders? :) Previously, i had desperately searched for perfection, precision and a complete absence of flaws, married with aesthetics, in high-end guns and watches, even high-end audio, i never did find any object that met my admittedly ridiculous standards, i began to think that no man-made object could, then i held the large Sebenza in my hand, looked at and felt it, saw the price, and i knew i was in serious trouble.

I was so impressed by the fit and finish, the simple, yet solid and beautifully designed locking mechanism, the utilitarian look, with only that beautiful, sapphire blue stud nodding to aethetics. Finally, it was clear that the materials used were top notch, i knew at that moment i was holding something special, something that was at the very top of the heap, and i still feel that way. I was and remain smitten by its precision, strength and utilitarianism, its aesthetic beauty, this after having purchased several knives more expensive than the Sebenza, some MUCH more expensive. Its smoothness opening and closing, the precise and satisfying click when it opens and locks, and closes, you may find other knives, probably equally or more expensive knives, that match it, you cannot find one however than beats it, the smoothness and precision of the knife can only be matched, not beaten. Do i now like other knives as much, yes, there are some pricey customs that i like for their aesthetics and pretty materials, and i still enjoy MT's and their like, but i will always have a place in my heart for the Sebenza, which remains a legitimate benchmark in quality, precision and beauty.---Ari

WOW!!!! Megalobyte, you just summed up my exact sentiments on the Sebbie. Nice to know that there are others like myself:D

We are not alone:eek:

A bottle of Thunderbird can get you drunk... So can a bottle of Dom...

Point is... If all you want to do is cut something, a razor blade or a shard of glass from either of the bottles aforementioned will cut.

I don't understand this whole argument, although I have seen it many times here at BFC.

I CHOOSE to spend my money or TRADE my favorite things for knives that I love. I have many Spyderco knives, and I carry them a lot. They are great. But my Small Sebenza blows 'em outta the water... I am on the list for a TNT, and that will replace my Sebenza.

I love my Sebbie, but when I get my Mayo, I won't be carrying anything else on a regular basis. It has nothing to do with the knife's ability to cut... It also has nothing to do with "feeling good 'cuz you have an expensive knife in your pocket'
I enjoy the craftsmanship of these knives... Sure... $500 or $600 for a knife sounds like a bunch... but keep in mind that a lot of "art knives" go for Five Thousand ++++

I think my Sebenza is a work of art.... and can't wait to get my paws on my TNT... I know for a fact that I will have both of them til i am in my grave and my son will pass them on to his son... There's A LOT TO BE SAID ABOUT CRAFTSMANSHIP!!!

Megalobite,

Some of us have been down the path you are on....

I still have a great fondness for my Sebenzas: they are a very fine production knife.... and a great way to break the price barrier into true custom knives.

But somewhere down the road, you just may come across a true custom knife that makes your Sebenza a closet queen (like mine). My Sebenzas have only seen two days of carry since I got my first TNT (and have seen NO carry since I got my next TNT...).

...and so the story goes.

Michael

.........and some of us still trod that path of excellence, right to Boise, Idaho!:D ;)

I've heard Russ rant and rave so that I am about ready to try out some Mayo!

But in all the customs I've been through I have never come across as precision an instrument as my Sebbie! And in the wood and leather inlaid models they are quite striking. At least to me:eek:  :D

Man, I wish my sebbie had only cost $345...that would have been a steal-of-a-deal!

I'm so glad this forum has a "Go to last unread post feature" - because if I actually had to read one more thread about Sebenzas(yes, of course I OWN one) my last thread of sanity might start to unravel.

I have spent over 30 years spending millions of dollars on behalf of clients to advertise and promote their products and services. In that time, I have never come across a phenomenon like the "I love/I hate Sebenzas!" controversy.

Chris must be chuckling all the way to the bank on this. If his "official" advertising budget for his company is in excess of $3.00 - it's way too much!
