What's the composition of Sandvik 14C28N?

I know it is similar to 13C26 but with nitrogen, but could not find the exact composition.

http://www.smt.sandvik.com/strip. Click applications then razor blades. 13c26 was the closest i could find. 14c28n is ver similar but just a little more corrosion resistant with a better edge holding. i have an older blur with 13c26n

Well I don't think 13C26 is in need of more corrosion resistance, as I have never been able to get mine to rust.

14C28N seems interesting though, but the composition is unknown.

Really? I get rust on mine and polish it every so often with noxon. It gets blotchy spots not full on pits.

Start with post 26. The poster with the screen name RazorSharp is Jerker, a rep from Sandvik.

Ah OK, so I see that it is:

Carbon: 0.62%
Chrome: 14%
Nitrogen: 0.08%

Kind of like the fully stainless version of INFI but without the molybdenum and vanadium.

I guess it's because you live in Connicticut. Here in California I have some vintage carbon steel blades from the 1850's and it only has minor rust spots from all this time.

You recently told the forum that 14C28N is a downgrade from 13C26, while laughing no less. Now you're asking what 14C28N is?

I'd be a bit more careful in the future with your "controversial" comments as they may be considered trolling, at least that's what they look like to me.

From my point of view it is indeed a downgrade, because of the slightly higher carbide volume. I did not need to know the composition to figure this out, could guess so from the naming.

You are pretty argumentive for a knife company representative.

Of course we all have a point of view, I guess if you feel it's a downgrade, it is in your world. Kai USA and Sandvik feel the opposite. It's all good.

Where's the argument? I get down in your backyard regularly, maybe some day we can talk face to face. I think you'd actually like me.

I'm still learning how a rep should act...I need a bit more time. Maybe we need a sticky?

Thanks for the understanding.

Just because he works for kershaw he can't be a human and voice his opinion or have harsher statements than "sir you are correct"? At least hes real, respect him for that.

LO F'in L

Has the composition of INFI ever been fully disclosed?

Says the fellow who has talks trash, then asks about the facts...POST FACTO! Ta da!

You're SUCH a newb. :p:p:p

For my opinion, because, well, everyone knows I'm an opinionated a-hole...14C28N is vastly superior in hardness and toughness to 13C26...the corrosion resistance is just a bonus.

I just purchased my first Kershaw, (the mini Cyclone) and while I would never pretend to be an expert, this 13 steel this thing is made out of seems amazing to me so far. I'm the type of guy who can take a knife that just needs a little touched up and make it a butter knife. However, I can place a razor edge on this Kershaw. Now you state the 14 is even better.................I guess I need to place another order. lol :)

Have all of the Kershaw models been switched over to the new steel? (My Cyclone was dated Jan-09)

Thanks

Bill

I've been more than impressed with Sandvik steel in my EDC uses. It's not a super steel, but I've never been disappointed with it. YMMV but I certainly like it.

Thomas is a good guy. I'd like him better if he didn't hate people who are left handed :grumpy:

Just kidding :D

Exemplary reply to a self-confessed trouble maker. I think you're starting to get the hang of this company rep thing. :D

OK, but you buy the beer.

You argue that 14C28N is a better steel than 13C26, but the comparison is unfair because the 14C28N is heat treated significantly harder despite the two steels being similar. It is easy for a company to say that a new product is better, without proof. Sure 14C28N may be more corrosion resistant, but no evidence that it would hold a better edge at the same hardness.
