whats the deal w/ damascus steel?

The city of Damascus was never a blade making center , only a trading center. The process of repeated folding was used by others such as the Scandinavians. Today it's mostly for show . With a good mix od steels it makes a good knife with a poor choice it makes a bad mix. You should also check the HT because yo want the steels to have the same HT,

I was told that Damascus could take and hold a great edge when it's not under stressful conditions such as chopping or buttoning, the reason behind this is because the edge can flake and chip (at a micro level) because of the folds in the steel.

I'll avoid hobby damascus but will seek Japanese damacus.
