What's the deal with the psuedo-superiority attitude knife people have towards people

I get the feeling that a lot, not all, of the people here who carry knives have this feeling of superiority towards people who don't carry knives. For example, the "sheeple" term is used freely to describe anybody who shows a hint of concern when somebody pulls out a knife to open a letter or any other unecessary situations.

Like I said, this isn't directed towards every knife enthusiast, just those who think that everybody should care about the latests knife steels, technology, brands, designs, etc. And anybody who doesn't isn't part of the hip crowd.

Some people need to get over themselves and realize this hobby is a subculture. 99.9 percent of the population couldn've give a sh!t you and I carry a knife, nor should they. We should be doing this for ourselves and not because we somehow think it makes us "smarter" and "better" than "them".

I'm not sure what your point truly is with this thread but I would argue that since these discussions we have regarding "sheeple" and other elements about how we view the subject of knives is done right here in a knife related forum community, that this is exactly where these types of dicussions should take place. In public I am very subdued about my knife interest and although I don't make any special effort to hide my knife when carrying I also don't flaunt it. I am much more out spoken in this forum though, right where I believe it belongs.

You ever see those situations in shows or comedy skits where a geek who plays World Of Warcraft starts making fun of person who doesn't play it just because the person doesn't know what a "power level" or a "magical ogre" is? That's how I view it when a knife-person makes fun of some people for being "sheeples".

People who fear knives and other tools, or who simply don't take responsibility for their day-to-day activities by carrying even the most basic of daily carry equipment, are inferior to those who do not and who do (respectively).

This is because they are less capable of coping with daily life. That is simply a fact.

Just a returning troll. Who promised he would cause trouble.

No big deal.

I think we all realize that carrying is a subculture, when we walk to the grocery store and see maybe one clip on one out of 150 people. Personally, I think I'm a bit smarter than the non-knife types, as a common clampack or UPS cardboard box requires their head scratching and gunking up their car keys w/ adhesive. Not to mention any kind of emergency seat belt cutting or something along that line (not day to day). Personally, I find talk of CPMD2, water stones and microserrations interesting, as more than a few BF members do... Not like i talk about the pros and cons of VG10 steel to my girlfriend... haha.

Sheeple, to me, describe the people who only view an elegant, sharpened tool as a weapon for stabbin'.

You sound pretty angry, guy.

Once you get beyond pen knives and the smaller pocket and neck knives, it would seem that we are talking about a Constitutionally protected right, sheeple seems a pretty mild term for stupid fools who shudder at the sight of a small knife.

Now that Sharp Phil has stated the obvious, let's apply that to sheeple.

I can't list the number times I've loaned a knife to someone because they won't carry, but they always need to cut or open something. So, they go begging for a handy tool from those who they discriminate against, in social status, and hiring.

They refuse to provide for themselves, and look down on those with foresight to do it for themselves. I learned my lesson, I don't loan to them. I just watch them helplessly gnaw or struggle using an inappropriate tool. They refuse to learn.

Often enough, the same ones who try to restrict my use and carry think nothing of bringing a 8 inch butcher knife into the workplace to cut cake or something. They don't recognize that they match the profile of the biggest abuser. The media continues to support the illusion by highlighting people similar to me.

There are sheeple - they take no regard for their personal protection, and willingly restrict your rights to do so. I do regard them as being of less sound mind. They demostrate it in their daily life - just look at the mortgage situation, loss of jobs, serious debt, and constant drive to achieve the "good" life.

I'm debt free, own firearms and knives, and have a secure pension (so far.) But I'm looked down on in their eyes for my frugality and lack of status, even while they become more dependant on my service and knowledge.

You want to know why sheeple are what they are, and despised here. It's a matter of perspective. Maybe it would be more accurate to characterize them as suburbanite yuppies, or something. One thing is sure, they play the game of exclusion, not inclusion, to make sure you know they are better than you.

Or, maybe that's what we do here. After all, if someone doesn't know that a flatground S30V droppoint titanium framelock is the pinnacle of knives, they have a lot to learn.:D

This is probably the best argument for continuing to use the term "Sheeple" I've heard so far.

Knife geeks... Nothin' wrong with that! Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to leveling a Death Knight. I'm almost 70.

A lot of the people down here play cowboy and there are some things you need to play right:
Big ol' truck
skintight wranglers with an ironed crease
checkered button-down shirt
boots, often with unusual leather (ostrich, etc)
and usually some kind of clip knife. Sometimes they are pretty good stuff (Spyderco or BM), quite a few Gerber paraframes, and lots of truck stop specials

I don't think I see that attitude very often and I don't think the term Sheeple has as much to do with people who don't carry knives as it does people who follow the mainstream and don't think or care too deeply about their rights or their individuality. Those people are not my favorites regardless of what they think of knives.

I don't have anything against people who are not interested in knives. Knives are just a hobby and an interest for me and everyone has their own interests. Why should I care if they don't like knives.

Agreed with this.

Carrying a knife is neither cool or uncool. And not carrying a knife is also neither cool or uncool. People should carry a knife if they need to or not carry a knife if they don't think they have to. It's all a matter of situation.

Good points, Tirod3. I do personally think it is easier to blame others for problems than to take on our own responsibilities (a big part of the problem in this country). Yuppies, "sheeple", and the media tend to blame society's problems on small segments of the population. These segments, such as people who commit violence with knives, guns, etc. are a very small segment of the population compared to those who carry such tools everyday in a responsible manner.

I think we are justified as responsible knife users to call it like we see it. The yuppies/sheeple/media group are, IMHO, the source of much of the irresponsibility in society.

Responsible tool use creates little if any problem compared to excessive greed, racism, financial irresponsibility, child abuse, and any number of other problems that most people seem content to ignore or endure as part of a "normal" society. I, for one, do not consider them normal.

People who need knives and don't carry them (where not banned) are stupid. I generally feel superior to stupid people. People who get alarmed at the sight of any and all folding knives are idiots (see above).

I would agree that there's an element of truth in the spirit of the O/P.

Of course I think it's generally a good idea to carry a knife, and generally a good thing that people do. Would also say that negative criticisms of people who do not carry knives are often overstated and politicized.

I am rarely without a knife, and would have to admit that a large part of the reason is simply that I enjoy knives.

I don't own or carry guns, but I think our culture is generally better for the fact that people do; and I support their right to do so.

Yes, knife people are superior. If an explanation is needed then you would not understand.
