What's the deal with the psuedo-superiority attitude knife people have towards people

We should be doing this for ourselves and not because we somehow think it makes us "smarter" and "better" than "them".
Frankly, it does make me better than them.

The ability to develop and use complex tools for a variety of tasks is what separates humans from all other living creatures on the earth.

If someone chooses to ignore this simple fact, and fails to assume some level of basic responsibility for their own well being, I have little sympathy for them.

"A man without a knife is a dead man". Alot of people do not live in a world of self reliance. They pay other people to do something for them. They have not developed proplem solving skills, most of which require tools. Can't cut up a chicken, scrape a gasket, cut ribbon to wrap a present. Can't sharpen a knife and appreciate the difference. A great loss of independence has happened to people in the last few generations, just ask those few people left that lived thru the depression. Our value system has changed. Few can appreciate a sharp edge, feel the difference in the shape of a knife in the hand, appreciate the workmanship that went into the knife, and understand why it works so well based on grind, steel etc. They don't take care of anything, just have someone else do it and throw it away when it doesn't work. We are due for a wake up call. It is great to have a forum like this to pool ideas.

I put my first knife in my pocket when I was about 6 years old. I'm almost 60 now, I can't help but think it has made me smarter.

Only time I feel superior to my friends and co-workers that don't bother to carry a knife, is when they need to cut something and have a stupid look on their face after trying to A. break a string and they can't- B. tear open a clamshell pack with their fingers, or even by biting it- C. or rip a hole in something they need a hole in and they can't-D. open a taped package and can't. Then I whip out a blade do the job for them and think my way was far superior!

People who fear knives and other tools, or who simply don't take responsibility for their day-to-day activities by carrying even the most basic of daily carry equipment, are inferior to those who do not and who do (respectively).

This is because they are less capable of coping with daily life. That is simply a fact.

Phill is right, these people never plan ahead and when they land in a great big pile of shit the first thing they do is look for people like us to bail them out. They don't have a clue and don't want a clue.

So, are you new trekkie or old trekkie?

Sorry, I had to because it looks almost the same.

Exactly.
They DO think it's a tad odd how much some of my knives cost though.:D

And, if something like what Kamagong posted above happens to them,
( http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1208/578224.html )
and they have no knife on them, then they will wish they had one of your knives that they probably thought you paid too much for.

If I'm following along correctly here, the central question of this thread is: If person A is carrying a knife, and person B is not, is person A superior to person B?

"Superior" is a heavy word, and someone who is modest and humble would not like to say they are superior to someone else. History is full of crazy, evil people who tried to say one group of people is superior to another (Hitler, for example).

But let's ignore all the negative vibes the word "superior" sets off for a moment.

Fact: Superiority is situational.

If something needs to be cut (and I mean needs to be cut, like the seatbelt that was choking the kid in Komagong's post above) and you don't have the knife, then the person who has the knife is superior to you. Until a true need to cut something arises, then the person with the knife is not superior to a person without a knife.

I carry a knife because I don't want to have to wait on someone with a knife to show up if my child is getting choked by a seatbelt, or if I can't seem to tear open the package my beef jerky is in.

...and people who don't carry some way to make fire are idiots as well. I just don't have a funny name for them yet.

This thread is great.

Here's my favorite "why I'm superior" story.

A fellow at the factory that I worked at, a friend of mine, was trying to tear open a package containing a new stapler. It was a clamshell package that was heat sealed around the outer edge. After pulling at it for a while, he started in with his teeth, when I saw him gnawing at the packaging like an idiot I walked over and offered him my pocket knife. Being the stubborn type, he refused it and then told me that if he wanted a knife, he would carry the one I had gifted him a few weeks before and he pulled it out of his desk, a CRKT folder, still in the box.

So now, with two knives in easy reach he continues to bite and pull with his teeth at the package. Finally, he makes some headway and gets a tear in the clamshell. He pulls as hard as he can and the package rips open dropping the stapler to the floor where it breaks into a hundred peices. As I laugh at his "inferiority" I look at him and notice the massive ammounts of blood streaming from his mouth. Turns out those clamshell packs can be pretty sharp. Eight stiches in your lip sharp.

Yea, I was superior that day.

A knife is one of man's oldest tools and one that's capibilities go far beyond just cutting. A knife's utility is so great and it's uses so many, that it is pretty foolish not to carry one. Especially this day and age when tiny, unobtrusive little penknives can be had for a dollar just about anywhere theres a cash register. For the price of a hamburger and fries you can have a small Swiss army knife that will last you the better part of the rest of your life and be used thousands of times.

I find MUCH more utility with a knife than a cellphone---that's why I do not own a cellphone.

That would make you a sheeple. According to the line of thinking by many of the knife nuts here, if it were followed by most cell phone carrying people. The point is that folks can, and do, make their own choices, and for the most part, do fine. You are free to make your choices as are they. It takes an notable egoist to claim that therefore those who choose otherwise are inferior.

Really, folks, this impulse to wag the nanny finger at sheeple out there reflects more poorly on knife nuts than the actual knives.

Wait wait wait wait wait, wait, wouldn't the singular form of "sheeple" be a "sherson"?

Or does that threaten the integrity and meaning of the word? What about "sheeperson"?
