What's the differances between CPM S30V and S30V?

Really hoping someone can tell me the differances between the two. I'm sure the CPM is better but just wondering if some members can give their option or facts to which why one would be better than the other. Thanks.

It's the same thing. S30v is a Crucible Powder Metallurgy metal.
It's often called S30v for short because there is no other variant of the steel.

Are you sure? Why is there a D2 and a CPM d2 or 154cm and CPM 154cm. Reason i asked this is because have two knives coming that say made from S30V on blade and a Para with CPM. I don't know why a company wouldn't put the CPM on it. I have passed up on knives thinking there is a s30v and cpm s30v and thinking the regular s30v was less superior as d2 or 154cm is too the CPM versions of those steels. But didn't really look into this before posting so i'll take your words for it.

Because S30V is a crucible steel, and they only make the CPM version of it.

Glad to hear this. Good news indeed. To tired to look it up and had to know before going to sleep. So i can sleep.:) Thanks everybody.:thumbup:

There is only CPM S30V steel. But, because there is no substitute, people often shorten it by removing cpm.

Other steels have two versions because one version existed before crucible decided to use their cpm process on existing steel types. So there is a difference between 154CM and CPM 154.

The differences betwen D2/CPM-D2 and 154CM/CPM-154 come from the CPM, or Crucible Powder Metallurgy, process. Basically, the powder steel versions from Crucible are more uniform in structure, leading to more consistent qualities and overall slightly improved performance.

In the case of S30V, Crucible is the only company making it, therefore there is no non-powder version of the steel. All S30V is technically CPM-S30V, so many places leave the CPM part off the description entirely.

EDI: Or what goodeyesniper said.

S30V=CPM-S30V
S90V=CPM-S90V
S110V=CPM-S110V

These steels only exist as CPM versions. We shorten the names for convenience.

CPM-154 is generally recognized as better than 154cm but I haven't seen definitive testing showing by what % it is better. As always YMMV and all that

I've seen lots of knife makers on here using CPM 154cm i'll look around to show one.

Don't think he's disputing that CPM154 exists. Suspect it's a tongue in cheek reference to a previous argument about correct terminology - CPM154 vs CPM154cm.

The early naming of CPM154 included things like CPM154CM which was confusing but they finally chose the correct CPM154.CPM is Crucible Partical Metallurgy NOTE -that's PARTICLE NOT POWDER ! It's been around since about 1970 ! The CM means Climax Molybdenum the company that developed 154CM from mods to 440c !!
CPM steels are better as the carbides are smaller and more uniformly distributed.Can be made sharper ,easier tho sharpen more wear resistant !!
Get it together guys !
