What's the differances between CPM S30V and S30V?

CPM steels are better as the carbides are smaller and more uniformly distributed.
Better to you maybe. I prefer D2 to CPM-D2 because the big carbides leave a toothier edge as it gets used. For me this is more useful.

Does it not say it right here on their website though? https://www.crucible.com/eSelector.htm

Link didn't go right to where it shows but is says 154 CM and made by CPM in stainless catagory. But i guess i get what your saying.

Yup, as axis fan said and crucible's site shows, there's only CPM-154. I know about the early designations too but if crucible calls the steel CPM-154, that's good enough.for me and as far as I'm concerned, knife makers who label their knives CPM-154CM, are wrongly labeling their steel.

Yes, Crucible labeled it that way so people would know what it was when it 1st came out, then later shorted it to CPM 154 due to the confusion that caused later on.

The really funny thing is how serious and or technical people think they sound when they say CPM154CM....... They don't, they sound like a moron that doesn't have a clue...

Then someone who is really knowledgeable asks what the heck is CPM154CM? Oh you ment CPM 154, oh OK..... Get it right next time idiot......... ;)

And no I wouldn't buy a knife from any custom maker who labeled it CPM154CM........ Or even said it.... Because if they don't even know what the correct label is how do they know what steel it is really in the 1st place?

Is it CPM 154 or 154cm?

Does it not say 154 cm here though. Wouldn't that be CPM 154 cm? Are they not labeling their own steel right?

Are you sure? Why is there a D2 and a CPM d2 or 154cm and CPM 154cm. Reason i asked this is because have two knives coming that say made from S30V on blade and a Para with CPM. I don't know why a company wouldn't put the CPM on it. I have passed up on knives thinking there is a s30v and cpm s30v and thinking the regular s30v was less superior as d2 or 154cm is too the CPM versions of those steels. But didn't really look into this before posting so i'll take your words for it.

Back on topic here. 154cm, d2, m4 etc existed before Crucible came out with the CPM process. S30v was designed by Crucible as a powdered/particle steel for use specifically in cutlery. Now I have yet to own or use a knife in CPM-D2 or CPM-154, though I do own knives in CPM-S30V and CPM-M4. I've done a lot of research on the different steels.

Alright, first time i've looked at these charts at Crucible. Got some studying to do so not asking so many stupid ?'s

Don't think he's disputing that CPM154 exists. Suspect it's a tongue in cheek reference to a previous argument about correct terminology - CPM154 vs CPM154cm.

Right on! There was a guy a couple of years back (I think) that was betting people that they could not find one case of Crucible calling it CPM154CM. Someone else came up with literature from Crucible proving that they did and the guy backed out.

Yes, they did label it that way when it 1st came out, but changed it to CPM 154 soon after due to the confusion it caused...

So we have 154cm AND CPM 154....

Actually it's still at the bottom of the Crucible data sheet, at the very bottom... But they don't call it that anymore, they just never changed the sheet...

Aldo Bruno refers to it as both cpm 154 and cpm 154cm. It is merely an argument of semantics. It's the same steel.

Try it another way ;)

There is no such thing as S30V, only CPM-S30V.

A huge giggle and a +1 :D

S30V and S35VN are proprietary steels from CPM.

D2 and 154CM are not. They are made by many companies with varying degrees of quality. CPM has their own method and people seem to be fond of their version

CPM-154 is its own monster of a steel IMO. It's so different that they should really give it some other name like, "Very Awesome Steel" or something along those lines because it really does not perform like 154CM. Above 61 and that's when the beast really comes out. Even at that hardness, it's tough as hell and it's holds its edge like a boss.

I think that with what custom makers can do with CPM-154 that it is one of the best steels that could be used on a folding knife and that it would be difficult to find a better all-around steel!!!

It is worth clarifying that 154CM and D2 are both steels available through Crucible (among other steel producers) and many makers like Benchmade use Crucible's D2 steel (NON-CPM-D2) for their knives.

Also, didn't Crucible initially design 154CM with an older PM process that pre-dated CPM?
