What's the most you will pay for a knife ??

Well, up till now, the most I've paid is about $200 for a Buckmaster 184, and it was worth every red cent. Now, I'm considering a Strider. Caught between the Seal 2001 ($700if I can find any...riiiiiight :() or a BT (about $325, maybe more if I get saw teeth on the back). I really don't think I could justify $700 for a knife that I'll likely never use to its full potential, and even 3-something for a BT is quite high. I just feel so guilty having such a tool and not using it! (I live in the city, and go hiking occasionally, but on a daily basis the most I ever have a need for is a letter-opener and nail clippers. :() But who knows? They are just soooooooo cool! Sometimes ya just can't resist...

higest is around 150$ (currently). 3 years ago... 15$ for a knife was too high for me :)
(it's hepls moving from Ex CCCP to USA :))

On the other hand... I was just looking at this new graphics card that came out for, get this, $400!!!
My boss is the type who would, and HAS, paid that much for a card before! It would obviously be so much better to spend that sort of cash on a tool that you could use. (IMO, of course! He would think i'm just as retarded to spend $400 on a knife!)

Haha...I just picture a $400 Strider vs. the $400 graphics card! Can you say "confetti"?!:D

So that makes me feel a little better about my newfound Strider need. Also, think of all those people who spend all that money on porcelain/crystal figurines. Dust collectors! My mom collects crystal stuff, (Swarovski) and I understand that stuff as little as she understands my knife hobby. To each his own...

Don't do it! You'll be stuck with it for the rest of your life. I bought an Ultra two years ago for a great price then ($325) and my wife can't understand why I've been wanting a newer one. Damn 6-month cycles...

Most for me was $170 for a handmade fixed blade. Just today I received a $50 Spyderco Native, and WOW it is Great, I love it!
In the future who knows, you know?

The most I have ever paid is $350 for my Sebenza.
I sold it a few days ago, and it will probably be
be a while before I go that high again. Lucky for
me, most of the knives I want are considerably less
money.

My first was a BM 910HS for around $116 and I thought that was about tops at the time. It is for the most part, but then again, I only have 13 knives. Most I spent is $150 for a REKAT Pocket Hobbit which was OK with me because it was a bear finding one after they had been discontinued. Also paid over the 910 for a 600. It probably was priced too high for the shape it is in, but I absolutely love the shape and they don't come along all that often. In the future I can see what I spend going up. Heck, unless Emerson listens to my cries and makes a production CQC-8, I'm going to have to fork over the bucks for one of them bad boys someday.

Atomic....nah, I'm the one who would rather spend the $400 on a Strider! I'm not that into computers! Sheesh! 400 for a vid. card. Insane!!!

$100 There are a lot of great fixed blades (Fallkniven, Cold Steel, etc.) and a few folders out there that are under $100 and would suit my needs just fine. I can fantasize about a Sebenza or a Busse Natural Outlaw, but I could never justify buying either.

I am getting divorced!

A sad and neccessary step. My married life has entailed a virtual knife buying curfew but in the last couple of weeks I have spent many hundreds of dollars (heh heh). A spot of retail therapy has put many things to rights :D

The most I will pay for a knife - right now, I baulked at the $300 mark for the Busses I lust after. However, as my income increases and tastes and collection changes I can only see the price mark going up. Existentialist Jean Paul Satre said we could never judge a man until his life is over. Likewise, it is impossible to place a limit on what I would be willing to pay for the right knife.

If you want to see serious dedication to the knife buying ethic (ethic?) check out the Busse forums. Hmmmmmm...

Kallisti...

Sorry to hear about your situation, but you're right; retail therapy all the way! Costs as much, or depending on how bad your situation is and how much "therapy" is needed, costs more than a therapist, but you get tangible results!

I've definitely self-medicated with retail therapy before! Versace will cure ANY ill! :D

2 years ago, I thought $120ish was ALOT to spend on a knife that I'd actually USE. Now I carry a Sebenza..... :)

The most I have spent is $325, but the most I am willing to spend is probably $600. Of course, a month ago both numbers were considerably lower. The agreement that I reached with the Minister of War was that we would fund the hobby at $200 per month with an automatic fund transfer from the joint account into my mad money account. If I want a pricey knife, I can save up. It works. - Lee

That's funny!

Thanks for your sympathy. If I ever run out of cutlery wants I may
explore Versace. I have one of their Versus suits but I rarely have
occasion to wear it. When I was looking at wedding presents I saw their kitchen range which was hilarious in it's pricing. There is definitely something cathartic in spending money!

About changing perceptions of value - I find it hard to admit to others I have spent over £100 on a knife. I have the preconception that anything over £100 is "a lot" and quite enough to blow the minds of non-holophiles :p Thank Goddess for Bladefoums and others with our particular brand of sanity.

Beemerphile - the weekly/monthly savings thing is a great way to go.

I have already spent over $1000.00 for a knife and will probably go much higher before I am done. I would love to get a Bill Moran knife, but know that it is something that I will have to save for, for a while.

At the moment most of the folders that catch my eye are production, therefore up to $250 or so, i wouldn't spend much more than $200 for a fb because it's easy enough to get a very useable custom by any number of reputable makers for that price. I'm lucky that i don't have a taste for 'fancy' knives. :D

I can tell you it's frightening! We say names like Mayo and Chris Reeves, they say names like Coach and Prada. In my house we try to be fair about discretionary purchases and I just spent around $400.00 on a Lile last weekend (my top so far). I'm also getting a rather expensive puppy this Saturday (awesome Alaskan Malamute show dog style puppy worth a couple Sebenzas) and suddenly she seems to be purse shopping. She mentioned that a girl at work just bought a $450.00 purse from some designer I've never even heard of.

I'm scared, very scared.

Good question!

I have been "comfortable" with the $500-$600 range but the ones I am thinking about now are about double of that range. Since I am into tacticals, I don't anticipate ever spending more than $2000 (ha ha, famous last words!).

For me, the question is not so much about absolute dollars spent, rather it depends on the specific knifemaker (or production brand)...for example, I often think, "I wouldn't spend $500 on a knife made by X but I would spend $1000 on a knife made by Y without blinking"

Wasn't so long ago ('round about the time I found this place) that I agonized for days over spending $65 (shipping included) for a knife; $100 was completely out of the question. Now my office EDC is a knife that cost $650 and I don't think twice about it.
