What's the most you will pay for a knife ??

I'm the opposite:)
My two most expensive knives are a small Sebenza, and a DDR CF EDC (~$450). They are also the knives that I carry the most. I'm much more willing to drop some cash on a knife that will see regular use, than one that will be used rarely.
Gotta get my money's worth out of them;)

I guess that the answer to this question is that as long as it is within reason, I will pay what it takes to get the knife I want. What is within reason does not always mean what I can afford.

well if you could afford it then...it wouldn't be a knife that you wanted...but a knife that you own

I think naturally what ppl spend on knives gradually rises.
My first purchase was $130. One of my more recent was $525.

Amen, Brother, the wife and I took a trip to Italy and Paris last month. We bought an extra bag to bring home shoes, purses and other things leather.

She has also found a new hobby; vintage posters, movie and play adds from Europe in the 30's and 40's so far, 3'x5' in size. The pieces themselves run from a couple of hundred to the thousands (she has kept to a nice middle range), but framing them nicely with UV plexi adds to the cost quickly!

Home decorating isn't cheap, good thing she makes more money than I do ;)

$100CDN or so.
I'll probably pay more as I progress though :D

The most I've ever spent was $210. I couldn't afford to do that right now. The most I would spend would have to depend on how much money I had to spend. Not that I'd spend all of it, but if you've got a lot of extra money it's much easier to spend a lot on a knife than it is if you don't. I could imagine myself going over $1000, but not this month.

$260 is the most I've spent on one knife. I would spend more if I had the cash but not right now. Too many damn bills to pay...
Lately I've been dreaming of Sebenza's...

Next time you get frustrated think of me.:)

I've set my limit at $100, so your $150 isn't cheap, I am. I've found too many quality blades at $100 or less that serve my limited needs very well. That doesn't mean I might not trade for a more valuable blade, but the c-note is my max out for an outright purchase.

One thing will always keep me in the lower range is carryability,(is that a real word?) I can't see myself spending $1000 on a blade that will sit on display, I'm a user, I bought a pear handled William Henry, and I'm afraid to carry it in my pocket with anything else for fear of scratching,(to me thats like owning a Kawasaki Z1R Turbo, and only doing the speed limit, no fun)

...herein lies the dividing line.

If you pay over $500 for a knife and don't use it
= you are a collector, dealer

If you pay over $500 for a knife and DO use it
= you are "freakin nuts" - like me:D:D

I have paid over $500 for knives that I was in no way afraid to carry. What's the use in having a custom knife, built to your specs, and not use it? For me, that doesn't make sense. If you're going to have a knife, use it - regardless of the cost.

How many of us have spent over $100 at the local amusement park? or at the prom? or over $1000 for a fancy vacation? Sure, these make for great memories - some that I would never trade;). Now, compare that cost to the thrill of carrying a high-quality custom-made knife around in your pocket and using it for years to come!

Isn't that the idea? That a higher quality knife will last longer? that it will keep its edge better? AND, be fun to look at/play with?

Personally, I draw the line at 4-digit figures. Yes, I am married (for those that don't know yet, my wife is due to deliver on Monday. ) She's a stay-at-home mom, so our budget is limited. My trick is this: I own a small PT biz, and any profit from it is mine, free to use how I want.:D:D So, I don't get any flak as long as I don't dip into the family income.

What's your take on these knives?

A $2000 damascus folder:

A $3500 auto

Any takers?

It's just money...:D:D

If I could force myself to save, I might go to $500-600. Generally my tops would be $200-250 and this would be on a rare occasion. Both my budget and 15 year old car dictate most purchases to be in the $100 range.

Cheers,
Gord

The most I've spent on one knife is $227.00 for my Satin Jack.

I suspect a true collector would be willing to spend more than someone who uses their knives.

I am basically a "user" and a bargain hunter. Some of my best purchases have been custom fixed blades by obscure makers...quality that matches or surpasses the "name" makers for less than half the cost.

The SJ will likely remain my most expensive purchase..it is more than enough knife for me, so, at least for now, the temptation to buy a Steel Heart is not there. ;)

I am willing to pay up to $50,000,000.00, but I just haven't found the right one yet. :)

Don't worry though, there was a time when I use to think anything over $25 was an extravagant waste. You will get there.

When i first got into accumulating (i don't necessarily collect) knives, I wanted every cool looking $15-20 knife around because I was clueless about what made a qaulity knife. I just liked the cool factor. I eventually started reading up on stuff and worked my way in a little more expensive production pieces ($25-75.) Breaking the $150 mark was pretty hard. I find once most people break that barrier, there is no turning back. I used to think "why buy a custom when I can get a production for 1/4 the cost when the custom is not 4X better." Then I bought my first custom. Now, I rarely buy production unless it is just something that I feel is very high quality and a little different from the norm. That is why i picked up a Camillus Madd Maxx 5.5 and 2 Camillus Fisk OVB bowies. My daily carry is a $400 Carson M4, and it's not the most expensive knife I own or have owned.

You think spending over $100 on a knife is crazy? Wait until this addiction gets to the point of spending $400+ on airplane tickets, hotel, transportation, and food/drinks just to go to the Blade Show and look at knives and meet the makers. That is when you truely know you are addicted and there is no cure.

I'm a regular at Timezone where the same question is posed about watches that cost as much as Ferarri's.. Guys walk around day-to-day with watches they paid 50K for.

However, almost no one balks at strapping on a 3k watch and most guys have several in that price range.

The most I have spent was about $750 for a small dark walnut spiral damascus sebenza.

Nowerdays I would prob not spend more than $350, not that I can afford to at the moment.:(

Hey Jeremy I like that, thats me I'm an accumulator, Hey just call me, "The Accumulator", "I'll be back"

Past the $275 mark but I buy a lot more $100+ knives than $300+ knives, maybe I should buy less frequently, at higher prices, nah I'll just keep buyin' what peeks my interest that day.:)

MM,

IMHO, there is a BIG difference between "using" a watch and "using" a knife...I mean you don't chop, slash, and pry (all destructive behaviour) with a Patek...you don't grind down the "factory edge" on a Breguet with diamond hones... nor do you scuff up an Audemars Piguet with a Kydex sheath! My point is that "using" a knife, by definition, means you have to subject it to some form of physical trauma.
