Actually it's probably not very safe to literally sleep with a knife under your pillow, but whatever my carry was for the day is on my nightstand. Not really sure why, mostly out of habit. Lets just say if someone was to enter uninvited during the night I wouldn't reach for my knife.
I do, however, literally have my Foursevens Quark Pro under my pillow at night. Moonlight mode comes in handy if nature calls in the middle of the night.

I keep a Cold Steel Urban Pal taped to the headboard right behind me. Makes a great grab & go weapon that requires very little finesse to use (anyone can throw a punch, and having 1.5" of sharpened steel protruding from your knuckle just makes it more effective.)

But your right, a knife isn't the best home invasion defense tool. Still, you can always grab another tool once the closest one is in hand. ;)

My left hand! Oh, also my bed :D

I'm one of them new-fangled techies that uses my phone for almost everything, flashlight included. I do usually keep an SAK classic on my bed, don't know when it got there or why it is there. I have all the self defense I need with bunch of crap by my window and door. Nobody is coming in without hurting themselves!

I do occasionally keep a knife next to me while sleeping, but it is just so I can flick the knife when I am bored and unable to sleep.

Tasman salt hanging off of the touch lamp on my night stand. Glock 23 easily accessible between the mattress and box spring.

I've got another pillow under my pillow. :)

Home security is handled by my shotgun B&Es down here are rather violent affairs. There are always a couple of knives in my nightstand drawer, to play with or for utility (right now there's an Opinel, a Protech Godfather and a couple of SAKs).

Old pic, I've gone back to the original stock.

I always have the same light close by. Can't speak highly enough of that moonlight mode. Perfect for midnight excursions. It especially excels at lighting up things in which you need to get close and see detail without a glare. I have an Eagletac dc25 and my brother has a couple of Surefires, each of their low modes much to bright for fine detailed illumination.

There's always something else close that goes boom.

Hahaha! Okay, so I'm not the only one!

I never thought I would like multimode flashlights until I bought one. Now I can't live without it!

When I have lived in areas where I felt the need for extra security at night, and when I have not owned a gun, I always felt better with a baseball bat handy instead of a knife.

A machete sounds good though.

I have a CZ52 and a SOG tactical hawk right next to the bed on my nightstand. within reach even if I am laying in bed. and many more surprises in the drawer in the nightstand.:)

Walther PPK is the correct answer.

But, for me, I keep my cs recon 1 at the edge of the bed, a Smith and Wesson model 10 5" barrel .38spl in the nightstand, a Steyr M9 9mm in the nightstand drawer, and a Remington 887 nitro mag 3.5" 12ga under the bed.

6 inch fixed blade in a leather sheath. Serves well as pillow support, and reposition as needed.

I keep one of the Barrett 50 cal's under there. You just never know, ya know? Wife kept complaining that there were oil stains on the pillow cases; hence, Rennaissance wax... :)

Nothing under the pillow but a sig p229 with a light and laser in the nightstand on one side of the bed and a rem. 12ga. with a light leaning in the corner of the other side of the bed.... i wouldn't suggest entering uninvited!
