What's up with all the chopping

How do you hammer in tent stakes with that sucker? :D

Hammer the stakes with the poll of the axe. Quite easy really. Hold it sideways, using the poll to hammer tent stakes, or wedges to split large rounds, or wet wood to get to the dry center.

Of course if you were kidding.... I just throw it at the stakes while running around the fire half naked and all hopped up on spruce tea!

I am in the chopping is fun camp.

I am in the deep south and just cleared a 200 yard fence line with a machete. I would not use an axe or a saw. I had to only carry a machete. It is also great exercise.

Great picts. Some awesome looking knives.

Man, that line up of khuks is something else. Makes me drool!

Unlike the South shelter and fire are crucial for survival in the North and being able to obtain materials requires chopping or sawing. For most chopping is related to smaller diameter wood for shelter making. I dont carry tent when in the woods for a day but a good knife is always in the pack just in case. Every environment has its issues and until you live there it seems foreign.

Actually I would have to slightly disagree with your assesment of the need for shelter in the South. The temp outside doesn't have to be very low at all for rain or just exposure to create a dangerous chance of hypythermia. Just ask anyone who scuba dives. In 75 degree water you have to wear something to keep from getting the chills. Rain is no better.

I prefer a knife in the 5" range for a field knife. Not so big that I can carve/whittle with it (I also carry a smaller pocket knife as well) but it's big enough that if I need to chop or baton I can. Why not have the option.

Thank you. This is the answer I was fishing for.

I dont disagree with a shelter anywhere. But the extreme cold in the north makes it more crucial under normal circumstances. I too have lived in extremes, every environment is managed differently depending on circumstances.

"Been to any good beheadings lately?" :p

My brother made that for me. It's known affectionately as the "Axe of Doom"

Over 1/4" thick 5160. Made for when you absolutely, positively must destroy something.

RB has got a point - people down south don't need big choppers, it's just too warm. You're wasting perfectly good steel.

Sooo... I hereby propose that all bladeforum members south of the Mason-Dixon line ship their big choppers to members in the cold north. In fact, I nominate myself to accept all large Busse blades that southern members need to divest themselves of...

Yes, I know, accepting other members Busses is a great responsibility but I'm ready for it - no, no, hold your applause. You can thank me later.

Remember - friends don't let friends waste good steel!

i never used to chop. this forum made me chop. it's fun.

no need for choppers. also no need for corvettes, i still want one.

Hollowdweller and Ilbruche,

It might be to much to ask, but could you list the makes and models of those khuks? You guys have some beauties!!!

Choppity chop chop.

I like choppers so much I've just started chopping down anything in my yard.

Neighbor's yard is next...

Up here you need heath and shelter to survive so you gotta chop. There's enough dead trees around here to satisfied your every needs thank's to the wind and snow and also beavers left overs. It's not just fun it's also a need to chop...cheers!!! btw don't bring a folding knife for survival up here...

Top one is a Kukhri House Bahadur. Second one is a HI Bura Dui Chirra that I rehandled. I also have a 22" Dui Chirra with the set of antler tools.

Boy, is this a thread full of dynamite! What a post.

When I was younger I carried a single fixed blade 5-6" and a folding saw, and that kept me covered pretty well. I used the saw very frequently for gathering firewood, because there isn't always deadwood right next to your camp site and you might have to walk a bit to find some.

I didn't care for the saw much, and moved on to a good hatchet. This has worked out great for me. It has a ton of uses around a campsite, aside from just gathering firewood. Now I've picked up a KaBar Heavy Bowie and intend to test it's limit as a chopper/camp knife and compare it's utility to my Fiskars.

But to the point, something to chop with just guarantees that I have a fire. I keep very modest, efficient fires meant to cook, keep me warm, and keep me company. These are not bonfires. I just don't find a pile of pre-cut wood waiting for me at my site (and no logs to drag over and burn) so I have to chop mine. Pretty simple!

One distinction I want to make, though, is that I NEVER CUT DOWN A LIVE TREE!! I was under the impression that no one was doing this, and I hope this is at least largely the case. If there was not plenty of deadwood in the forests I was frequenting, I would rely on a stove setup. Maybe I'm just lucky to live in Kentucky. I'm nowhere close to a 'hippie', but trees/nature/God spent a lot of time growing just to give us shade, O2, shelter and a great view. Being a good steward of the woods means not destroying what we visit. (All this is a little less relevant in a 'survival situation obviously, but that's not what we're talking about.)

A chopper, whatever it may be, is simply another tool and lets me get the most out of the outdoors, and exists to compliment other tools, mainly my SAK and whatever ~4" fixed blade I decide to carry.
