I was excited when spyderco made their first flipper, but finding out its non assisted was a little disappointing for me.
Since they have come out on the market I have been seeing them changing hands like a hot potato.
People will buy them and put them up for sale in a few days.
So I just wanted to know why are people handing them off so fast? What's wrong with them?

My experience watching the exchange is that popular knives are bought and sold a lot. Do all the Sebenzas and ZT 560/561s I see popping up there mean something is wrong with them?

I had a Sebenza for less than a week before selling it; not because it wasn't a very nice knife, just because it didn't do it for me. The way you pose your question makes it look like you're trolling a bit . . .

People feed off the hype, get excited and spend the money before they realize they can't afford the blade. Then the next months bills come in and the next thing you know, your grail knife is on the auction block. I know from experience, but I have learned.

Like others have said, you're going to see a lot of buying and selling of one of the most hyped and popular knives of the moment.

This more than anything. Poor impulse control. Can't tell you how often I see "picked this up last week but bills are coming due so I have to let it go" or something similar. Some people budget their hobbies poorly. I'm guilty of it at times myself...it's easy to quickly work yourself up to a buy.

Like others have said... People sell off knives. Don't let them popping up in the for sale section discourage you one bit. To be honest.. I absolutely love my Southard. It is a fantastic design as it stands. In my opinion if it were assisted, it may be too much. Personally, I don't feel assist is needed with his design. It is a super smooth flipper in my opinion. I can easily push on the tip of the flipper to open mine without the need for any wrist flip. Mine flipped opened fantastic right out of the box. Just my two cents.

If it was assisted I wouldn't have bought it.

Not all flipper style knives require assisted opening to be well build and high quality. The design and build quality are fine as is on the Southard. Most people that have some experience with a variety of knives can attest to this. Yes, they have been selling a lot. Just like any other knife on the market that is new and has the same overall quality and materials.

Look at the XM18s, VECPs, Shirogov, 0777, 0560/61, etc knives. Same thing happens. Just because this is happening doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them. I would guess many people that are selling the knives have either bought multiples, bought the knife and checked it out because a local knife shop is not available, or want to try something else due to limited funds. Again, that does not indicate that something is wrong with them. A lot of people habitually sell a knife after owning it for a short time Maybe you are just seeing a long term trend for the first time and taking notice, it's nothing new.

Who wants to pay $250 for a spring assisted knife?

Agreed. Part of a knife being more expensive is the added workmanship that goes into the fit/finish/smoothness of the knife. Why glaze over that extra work by adding a spring which traditionally can hide a lot of issues with a knife.

The only 'expensive' assisted knife I own is a ZT0301 and that is the only case where I see a need for the assist because the blade is so dang heavy and gigantic. It needs that little bit of help.
