What's with "The Hole"??

Hope that this wasn't a private party. I'm in agreement that all opening devices have equal value. Someone is not inherently more competent, safer, or faster with the Spyderco hole. If you devote your time to competency opening with a disc or stud, is there really a difference? One thing I will note about the hole is that to my thinking it weakens the lateral blade integrity. And will all due respect Mr. Glesser, the spyderhole was not the first manual one-handed opening device. There were "one-armed trappers" designed well before the turn of the century that were designed for arm or hand amputees; one or more of the folder's blades were clipped at the end to be snagged on a pants pocket or other surface and opened. Just some thoughts. The Professor.

Professor,

The "lateral strength" argument has been used before. However, there's not the slightest shred of evidence -- not even the murkiest kind of 2nd-hand anecdoteal evidence -- that this is actually any kind of issue. The knife companies are claiming they don't get complaints about blades broken at the holes, no one here has had this happen, and everyone who has actually tried to break a blade has actually ended up busting the knife at the pivot or something instead. Remember, a folding knife will break at the weakest point, and that's almost always the pivot or other pin or the handle rather than the blade, whether or not the blade has a hole.

The place where many of us *have* broken blades is at the very tip, but that's not a blade-hole issue...

Professor - I'm not old enough for the "turn of the century", but the kids in my neighborhood used to grind small "nodule/hooks on the spine of our "spring back knives". Just behind the tip. Used it to "catch" our clothing with for rapid deployment.

Also a number of European and Asian cultures created "production" folders with a "leg" on the tang to swing the bladed open with your thumb and your hand would hold the blade open by pressing down on the "leg" now adjacent to the handle. This was done 200+ years ago.

Many old ideas, however the Human's ability to refine them is awesome.

Variety is the spice of life.

1) If you are hung up on "the hole", you are losing out.

2) If you are hung up on the "un-hole" you are losing out. I think I just coined a word- "un-hole". Cool....

Again, variety. Get one (or more) of each.

I agree with Greenie all the way. That's why I love all the methods because they just give us such a good variety of toys to play with!

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

I'm a hole convert. My first one hand knife was a Tekna auto which broke. Then came the balisongs.

When I became of age I bought a Timberline Timberlite at rip off price then a Beretta Airweight. The studs of the Timberline came loose so I screwed them back on.

I recently (last yr.) got an old Endura and trained myself to use the hole. The stud is a little bit faster for me but I like the Spyderhole better. It's more secure for me since I wear gloves more. Also, it's easier for me than the SOG and Gerber holes.

... another reason I like the hole is because I can hang my Spydies on the wall with it...

Hey, this thing got quite a few posts, didn't it? Guess it shows just how anal and bored we all really are

!

Another valid argument to this is that the bldae whole doesn't tear latex gloves AS EASILY as thumb studs or disks. I have tore the latex gloves I use at work on several different one-hand openers, but I PERSONALLY prefer the knife I have with me that gets the job done when I need it. Later

Ken we are just TOO serious

....No actually I hope no one takes offense to my antics(satire) here on the forums....I do find this place pleasantly amuseing from time to time..theres always a good laugh lurking within!!! (not laughing at anyone)(well once in awhile maybe)he he he...

Just got to keep this "holy", or is it "un-holy" string going. The humor is great.

LET'S TRY TO SET A RECORD ON THE FORUM FOR THE LONGEST STRING.

Let's see. There are now 2000 members, so if each member responds once, in theory we could get a string 2000 replies long!

Sparky will probably blow a gasket!

THIS IS A CHALLENGE..............

Keeping the whole story going (sorry), I like it a lot but my favorite manual opening device right now is Brian Tighe's rather large rectangular titanium thumb stud. Aside from being a very effective method to open the knife, it serves as an ergonomic thumb platform that greatly aids in choking up on the blade when necessary. It thus serves a double duty which a spydie hole can't quite duplicate.

Hey Rick is there a picture of this knife anywhere, sounds interesting!! Never seen it..Thanx Bart

Bart: Here's a link to a photo but it doesn't convey the thumb "disk" well, as it's shown from the side. It measures roughly .38 x .5, doesn't snag on clothing, and makes the perfect thumb rest.

I'm referring to the larger of the two knives in the photo. I assume that other makers use a similar design, but this is the style that I'm familiar with. BTW, thanks to Scott for the great knife.

Knives with holes in the blades are easier to spot in movies, on TV, the news. The profile really stands out and will be the new stereotype edged weapon that the PC idiots will try to get banned.

Greetings,

While examining my Benchmade Walter Brend Design Folder, I discovered that I could pull the thumbstud out. It can also pop out if you tap the blade (stud facing down) against an object.

I ended up losing the knife without too much heartache and have since then, become more partial to the Spyderco's minimalist's design of just a hole.

I own a Delica and a Military. I've had and lost an Endura, but I want to buy a pair of the Endura 98s.

Oh yeah, I caught my brother blowing bubbles with his Endura while he was cleaning it. Can't do that with a stud or disk.
